14% of 2560 is 358 px, 35% is 896 px, and 6% of 1440 is 86 px. The dashed box is the area Meta's guidance leaves free of the app's buttons and profile bar.

Instagram feed: 4:5 against 1.91:1 at 1440 px wideFrame 1440 by 1800 pixels. Safe area: 1.91:1 landscape: 1440 × 754, 1440 by 754 pixels at x 0, y 0. Covered area: Unused by landscape: 1046 px, 1440 by 1046 pixels at x 0, y 754.1440 px1800 px1.91:1 landscape: 1440 × 754Unused by landscape: 1046 px
  • 1.91:1 landscape: 1440 × 754
  • Unused by landscape: 1046 px
Meta's Instagram feed image page accepts 4:5 (400 × 500) to 1.91:1 (191 × 100). At 1440 px wide the recommended 4:5 file is 1800 px tall and a 1.91:1 landscape about 754 px, so the landscape gives up 1046 px of feed height. A square, 1440 px tall, sits between them.

How Meta Ads shows your image

  • 4:5 is the tallest ratio Meta's Instagram feed image page accepts (its range runs from 400 × 500 to 191 × 100), so it takes the most screen height of any feed image. Stories and Reels are full screen at 9:16.
  • Tolerance matters. Instagram feed and Stories pages state a 1% aspect-ratio tolerance, while Facebook feed and carousel pages state 3%. The pages we read do not say what happens to a file outside the band, so stay inside it.
  • Minimums are floors, not recommendations. A 500 px wide file meets the Instagram minimum, but Meta's recommendation is 1440 px wide.
  • Carousel cards in the feed are 1:1 at least 1080 × 1080. Carousel cards in Stories are 9:16 at least 1080 × 1920.
  • Video limits differ by placement: Facebook feed 1 second to 241 minutes, Instagram feed and Stories 1 second to 60 minutes, Reels 0 seconds to 15 minutes, Facebook Stories up to 3 minutes.

How to resize and upload

  1. 01List the placements the ad will run in. Meta recommends 4:5 for feed and 9:16 for Stories and Reels; carousels use 1:1 cards in feed and 9:16 cards in Stories.
  2. 02Make one master per shape. Use the resizer above with Feed 4:5 for feed and Stories and Reels 9:16 for the vertical shape.
  3. 03On the 9:16 master, turn on Show safe zone and move every headline, price and logo into the dashed box.
  4. 04Export JPG for photos or PNG for graphics. Check that the file is under 30 MB (images) or 4 GB (video).
  5. 05Check your copy against the character limits above. The Meta ad copy preview shows how primary text and headlines truncate.
  6. 06Upload each master to the matching placement, and review the preview for every placement Meta shows before you publish.

Common mistakes to check before you post

  • Using one 1:1 image for every placement. A square is not one of the recommended shapes for Instagram feed, Stories or Reels.
  • Ignoring the bottom 35% on vertical ads. Meta asks you to keep it free of text and logos, so anything in the last 896 px of a 1440 × 2560 ad risks being covered by the app.
  • Trusting a third-party checklist. Some guides still say 1080 × 1080; Meta's Ads Guide lists 1440 × 1800 for feed.
  • Treating pixel conversions as official. Meta states percentages for Instagram; the pixel boxes on this page are arithmetic.
  • Putting text on a right column image. Meta says it displays small on desktop and advises against it.
  • Letting a carousel mix shapes. Meta lists a single ratio for each placement's cards, so keep all 2 to 10 cards the same shape.
  • Uploading a 9:16 video to Facebook feed without checking. That page recommends 4:5, so look at the feed preview in Ads Manager before you publish. See the Instagram story size page for the vertical shape.

The sizes to export, in one pass

Two masters cover most Meta ads. 1440 × 1800 (4:5) is Meta's recommendation for Facebook and Instagram feed images (Facebook, Instagram), and 1440 × 2560 (9:16) is the recommendation for Stories and Reels (Meta Ads Guide). Both are JPG or PNG up to 30 MB.

Carousels are the exception: feed cards are 1:1 at least 1080 × 1080, and Stories cards are 9:16 at least 1080 × 1920. If you have a 1080-wide file only, check it against the minimum widths in the table: 600 px for Facebook feed, 500 px for Instagram feed and Stories.

4:5 is also a common shape for organic portrait posts, so a post you already made can often run as an ad. Instagram post size covers the organic side.

Safe zones: the arithmetic

For Instagram Stories and Reels, Meta says to keep "roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% on each side" free from text, logos and key elements. Apply it to 1440 × 2560: top 0.14 × 2560 = 358 px, bottom 0.35 × 2560 = 896 px, each side 0.06 × 1440 = 86 px. The clear box is 1268 × 1306 starting at x = 86, y = 358.

The same 14%, 35% and 6% zone appears on Meta's Instagram Reels pages and on its Facebook Stories image page. Only the Facebook Stories video page differs: 14% at the top and 20% at the bottom, with no side zone. So a price printed at y = 1700 on a 1440 × 2560 ad sits below the 35% line (y = 1664) but above the 20% line (y = 2048): clear in a Facebook Stories video, at risk of being covered in every other vertical placement.

Design to the 35% zone and one file is safe in all of them. The Instagram story size guide converts the same zone to a 1080 × 1920 story and adds the organic safe area.

Video specs by placement

Every video placement in the table takes MP4 or MOV (all except Reels also list GIF) up to 4 GB. Meta's video pages ask for H.264 compression, square pixels, a fixed frame rate, progressive scan and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or higher, and its feed video pages say to avoid edit lists and special boxes in the file container.

Length is where placements differ. Facebook feed is 1 second to 241 minutes, Instagram feed and Stories 1 second to 60 minutes, Reels 0 seconds to 15 minutes, and Facebook Stories up to 3 minutes. Stories carousel video cards are 1 to 15 seconds. Meta calls captions optional but recommended; for Reels it calls sound strongly recommended.

  • Facebook feed video: 4:5, 1440 × 1800, minimum 120 px wide and tall.
  • Instagram feed video: 9:16, 1080 × 1920, minimum 250 px wide.
  • Stories and Reels video: 9:16, 1440 × 2560.

Text limits that decide how much copy fits

Meta lists different character limits by placement: Facebook feed primary text 50 to 150 and headline 27; feed carousel primary text 80, headline 20, description 18; Instagram feed image primary text 125 and headline 40; Instagram Stories and feed video primary text 125; Reels primary text 44; right column headline 40. Check the placement preview in Ads Manager to see how longer copy displays.

Write the shortest version first and expand only if the placement has room. The Meta ad copy preview is a quick check, and the budget pacing tool helps once the ad is live. For how these placements relate, see carousel ads vs single image ads.

What we could not confirm

  • Meta's Ads Guide loads with JavaScript. We read each page through a text extractor on 2026-10-05; if a number matters for a launch, confirm it on the live page.
  • The Ads Guide is inconsistent with itself. Instagram feed image ads list 4:5, but the Instagram feed video page lists 1080 × 1920 (9:16). We report both.
  • Meta's Facebook Stories video page lists a 20% bottom zone, while its Facebook Stories image page and the Instagram pages list 35%. The video page also gives pixel figures (250 and 340 px) that do not match its percentages. Pixel boxes here are our arithmetic from the percentages.
  • We did not cover Marketplace, Search results, Messenger or Explore placements, or collection and Advantage+ catalog formats.
  • Some third-party guides, such as SaveMyLeads (published 2024-07-29), still list 1080 × 1080 as the recommendation. We could not establish whether or when Meta's own page recommended a different size.

Meta ad specs FAQ

What size should a Meta ad image be?

1440 × 1800 pixels (4:5) for Facebook and Instagram feed, and 1440 × 2560 (9:16) for Stories and Reels. Images are JPG or PNG up to 30 MB.

Is 1080 × 1080 still a valid Meta ad size?

Feed carousel cards still list 1:1 at 1080 × 1080 minimum, the right column ad uses 1080 × 1080, and Instagram feed image ads accept ratios from 4:5 to 1.91:1, which includes 1:1. For single-image feed ads Meta's recommendation is 4:5.

What is the Meta ads safe zone?

For Instagram Stories and Reels, keep 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side clear. On 1440 × 2560 that is 358 px, 896 px and 86 px, leaving a 1268 × 1306 box.

How long can a Meta video ad be?

It depends on the placement: up to 241 minutes on Facebook feed, 60 minutes on Instagram feed and Stories, 15 minutes on Reels, and 3 minutes on Facebook Stories. Stories carousel video cards are 1 to 15 seconds.

How many cards can a Meta carousel ad have?

2 to 10. Feed cards are 1:1 at least 1080 × 1080, and Stories cards are 9:16 at least 1080 × 1920.

Can one image run on both Facebook and Instagram?

For feed, yes: 1440 × 1800 (4:5) is Meta's recommendation on both, but Instagram states a 1% ratio tolerance and Facebook 3%, so export exactly 4:5. For Stories and Reels, use 1440 × 2560 and keep 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% at each side clear, which satisfies every vertical placement in the table.

What is the minimum image size for Meta ads?

It depends on the placement: 600 × 750 for a Facebook feed image, 500 px wide for Instagram feed images and for Stories and Reels images, 1080 × 1080 for a feed carousel card, 1080 × 1920 for a Stories carousel card and 254 × 133 for the right column. Meta's recommendation for single images is 1440 px wide.
