X (Twitter) · Updated October 10, 2026
Twitter (X) header size (2026): 1500 × 500 px
A Twitter (X) header should be 1500 × 500 pixels, a 3:1 ratio, as a JPG, PNG or GIF. The profile photo covers the lower-left corner, so keep text and faces away from it.

How X (Twitter) shows your image
- X says up to 60 px at the top and bottom of the header can be cropped, depending on monitor size and browser.
- The profile photo overlaps the lower-left corner. On desktop it covers about 366 × 188 px of the header (x 35 to 401, y 312 to 500), larger than the 220 × 220 some guides quote.
- On mobile a button can cover about 200 × 100 px in the lower-right corner, according to third-party guides.
- Linearity reports that X trims about 50 px from the top and bottom on mobile, close to X's own 60 px figure.
How to resize and upload
- 01Pick the Header 3:1 preset in the resizer above.
- 02Drop in your image. If it comes from another platform's banner, read the reuse section below first: a 4:1 LinkedIn banner has to be enlarged to fill 3:1.
- 03Move the image until the subject is in the center, or use Detect subject.
- 04Turn on Show safe zone and keep text and logos inside the dashed box.
- 05Download as JPG for photos or PNG for text, then upload it from Edit profile on X.
- 06Open your profile on a phone and a computer and check both crops.
Common mistakes to check before you post
- Putting a logo or name in the lower-left corner, where the profile photo sits.
- Placing a call to action in the lower-right, where the mobile button covers it.
- Using a 16:9 post image as a header. Cropping 16:9 to 3:1 removes about 40% of its height; crop it deliberately instead.
- Uploading at a smaller size than 1500 × 500, which looks soft on large screens.
- Treating the 400 × 400 profile photo size as the header size; they are different images.
The header at a glance
X's help page recommends 1500 × 500 for header images and 400 × 400 for the profile photo, accepts JPEG, GIF and PNG, and caps profile photos at 2 MB (X Help Center). The same page says that on some monitors and browsers up to 60 px at the top and bottom of the header can be cropped.
The ratio is 3:1, a little taller than a 4:1 LinkedIn profile banner, which leaves slightly more vertical room.
Worked example: the clear area
On X's desktop profile, the photo covers about x = 35 to 401 and y = 312 to 500 in header pixels. Third-party guides put the mobile Follow or Edit button at x 1300 to 1500 and y 400 to 500. Text between x = 420 and x = 1280 avoids both. Leaving 60 px at the top and bottom, the amount X says can be cropped there, gives a clear area of 1280 − 420 = 860 px wide by 500 − 120 = 380 px tall.
That is 860 × 380, about 2.3:1: 57% of the header's width and 76% of its height. If a design needs the full width, keep text above y = 300; the band from y = 60 to 300 is clear edge to edge.
Posts, photos and ads on X
X's help page accepts JPEG, PNG and GIF photos up to 5 MB, with animated GIFs up to 15 MB on web and 5 MB on mobile. It gives no pixel size, but says a single photo between 2:1 and 3:4 displays in full (X Help Center). X's API docs add WEBP and allow up to 4 photos per post (X API docs). 1200 × 675 (16:9) is the post size third-party guides such as Linearity use; how multi-photo grids are cropped is not published.
For standalone image ads X recommends 1200 × 628 at 1.91:1 or 1200 × 1200 square. Image ads with app buttons, polls or a website card use 800 × 418 or 800 × 800, and conversation-button ads use 800 × 418. Files are PNG or JPEG up to 5 MB, and GIFs render as a static image (X Ads creative specs).
Reusing a banner from another platform
A 16:9 image such as a 1920 × 1080 Discord server banner crops to 3:1 at 1920 × 640, keeping 59% of its height, then scales down by 0.78 to 1500 × 500. Decide which 640 rows to keep before you crop.
A 4:1 LinkedIn profile banner is the opposite problem. Cropping 1584 × 396 to 3:1 keeps 1188 × 396, which has to be enlarged by 1.26 to reach 1500 × 500, so it will look soft. Rebuild it from the original artwork instead.
A 2560 × 1440 YouTube banner crops to 2560 × 853 and scales by 0.586. Its 1546 × 423 center text strip then lands at about 906 × 248 in the middle of the header, from x = 297 to 1203 and y = 126 to 374. Its lower-left corner (left of x = 420, below y = 300) sits behind the profile photo, so keep text in the upper or right-hand part of the strip.
What we could not confirm
- help.x.com blocks automated fetches; we read the help pages in a browser on 2026-10-05.
- The 5 MB header limit and the 200 × 100 mobile button zone are third-party figures. We measured the profile photo zone on X's desktop site on 2026-10-10; the iOS and Android apps may place it differently.
- X does not publish a recommended pixel size for organic post images; 1200 × 675 is a convention.
- How X crops multi-photo grids is not published.
Twitter (X) header size FAQ
What size is a Twitter (X) header?
1500 × 500 pixels (3:1). Keep text inside the clear 860 × 380 px area (x 420 to 1280, y 60 to 440) so the profile photo, the mobile button and X's 60 px top and bottom crop don't cover it.
What size is a Twitter (X) profile picture?
400 × 400 pixels, JPEG, GIF or PNG, up to 2 MB. It is shown as a circle for most accounts.
Why is my X header cropped?
X says up to 60 px at the top and bottom can be cropped depending on monitor size and browser, and the profile photo covers the lower-left corner. Keep key content in the center.
What size should an X post image be?
