Facebook cover photo size (2026): 851 × 315 px

Upload a Facebook cover photo at 851 × 315 pixels (about 2.7:1) as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB. It must be at least 400 × 150, and phones crop the left and right sides, so keep key content in the middle.

Facebook's help page gives 2.4:1 for mobile. At 315 px tall that frame is 756 px wide, so only about 47 px goes from each side.

How Facebook shows your image

  • Facebook's help page lists different frames for desktop and mobile, and both crop your 851 × 315 file. Mobile cuts more from the left and right.
  • The profile picture sits on top of the cover. Facebook says the left side of the cover will be partly covered by it, and that it overlaps the cover by about 40 pixels on mobile, so nothing important belongs in the bottom-left corner.
  • Third-party measurements put the desktop frame near 820 × 312 and the mobile frame near 640 × 360. Facebook does not publish those two numbers, so we use them only as a cross-check.
  • Facebook says a cover with a logo or text may get a better result as a PNG. For photographs, its fastest-loading recommendation is an sRGB JPG.
  • The 100 KB figure is a file-size target for fast loading, not a hard upload limit that we could find stated.

How to resize and upload

  1. 01Pick Page cover 851 × 315 in the resizer above, or Group cover 1640 × 856 if the cover is for a group you manage, then drop in your image.
  2. 02Leave Crop to fill selected and drag the picture, or use the arrow keys, until the subject is in the middle third. Detect subject can place it for you.
  3. 03Turn on Show safe zone. Keep the logo, face and any words inside the dashed center box, which is the strictest mobile case.
  4. 04Move anything important out of the bottom-left corner, where the profile picture will land.
  5. 05Download JPG for photos, the format Facebook says loads fastest (sRGB, under 100 KB), or PNG for logos and text.
  6. 06Check the file size in your computer's file info. If a JPG is over 100 KB, simplify the image or re-export it at lower quality in an editor.
  7. 07Upload it as your new cover, then open the page on a phone and on a computer. Reposition if the crop differs from the preview.

Common mistakes to check before you post

  • Designing for the desktop frame only. Under the 640 × 360 mobile frame that third-party guides report, a phone removes about 145 px from each side of an 851 px file, so a logo placed at the edge disappears.
  • Placing the logo at the bottom-left. Facebook says the profile picture partly covers the left side of the cover.
  • Uploading a photo straight from a camera. A 6000 px wide original is far above the 851 px target and far above 100 KB.
  • Saving text-heavy artwork as a heavily compressed JPG. The edges around letters turn muddy; use PNG for logos and words.
  • Uploading a file close to the 400 × 150 minimum. Facebook enlarges it to fit the frame, so it looks soft on a large monitor.
  • Reusing the same artwork for a group cover. Facebook recommends 1,640 × 856 (1.91:1) for groups, a very different shape, so a Page cover will not fit without heavy cropping.

Which size to upload, and why Facebook's page contradicts itself

Facebook's help page for Page profile picture and cover photo says the cover photo loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that is 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and less than 100 kilobytes. It must be at least 400 × 150. Those are the numbers on this page, and for Page covers they are the only ones we treat as official.

The same help page says the cover left-aligns with a full bleed and a 16:9 aspect ratio on computers, and a 2.4:1 aspect ratio on mobile. Neither matches 851 × 315, which works out to about 2.7:1 (851 ÷ 315 = 2.70). A true 16:9 frame at 851 px wide would be about 479 px tall. So the published ratios describe how Facebook displays the image after cropping, not the shape you upload.

The practical answer is the same either way. Upload 851 × 315, treat the middle as safe, and verify on a phone.

How desktop and mobile crop your cover, with the math

Because the two readings of the mobile frame disagree, the diagrams above show both. You can check them with a calculator.

16:9 reading (strictest). Third-party guides report a mobile frame near 640 × 360. To fill 360 px of height, a 315 px tall image is scaled by 360 ÷ 315 = 1.143. The 640 px of frame width then covers 640 ÷ 1.143 = about 560 px of your original, so (851 − 560) ÷ 2 = about 145 px is cut from each side.

2.4:1 reading (Facebook's help page). A 2.4:1 frame at 315 px tall is 315 × 2.4 = 756 px wide, so (851 − 756) ÷ 2 = about 47 px is cut from each side.

Design inside the stricter result: the center 560 px, from x = 146 to x = 706. That is what the safe-zone toggle in the resizer outlines. If your artwork survives that, it survives either reading and the desktop frame, which crops far less.

We could not confirm the exact mobile frame size from Facebook, which is why we give both. Anything inside the center 560 px is safe under every number we found.

Where the profile picture lands

Facebook states that the left side of the cover will be partly covered by the profile picture, and that the picture overlaps the cover photo by about 40 pixels on mobile. It does not give a desktop overlap in pixels. ContentStudio puts the desktop overlap at about 96 px in from the left and 96 px up from the bottom; that is a third-party measurement.

So keep a name, logo or tagline out of the lower-left corner. If your brand mark is the profile picture, do not repeat it in the cover; use the cover for the message the profile picture cannot carry, such as what you do or where you are.

Page cover, personal profile cover and group cover

Facebook documents the Page cover. ContentStudio says a personal profile cover uses the same 851 × 315 upload and the same 820 × 312 desktop display, but Facebook's help page only describes Pages.

Group covers are different. Facebook's group cover help page recommends 1,640 × 856 pixels (1.91:1) and says not to put important information in the areas its diagram greys out, because group visitors may not see the entire image on a mobile device. The text does not say which edges those are, so keep key content in the center and check the preview in the group before you publish. The resizer above has a Group cover preset.

For an event, a different shape applies. Facebook's event covers have their own size; a Page cover will not fit one without cropping.

File type and the 100 KB target

Facebook says the cover loads fastest as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, and that a cover with a logo or text may get a better result as a PNG. Those pull in opposite directions: PNGs of artwork are often larger than 100 KB.

A workable rule is to use JPG for photographs and PNG for flat artwork, and accept a PNG that runs over 100 KB if that is the price of crisp lettering. We found no Facebook statement that a cover over 100 KB is rejected; 100 KB is tied to fastest loading.

Convert wide-gamut or print-profile images to sRGB before export. Facebook names sRGB, and colors from other profiles can shift when the file is processed.

If your Page runs Meta ads

A cover photo is the first thing someone sees after tapping through from an ad, so it should match the offer. Ads use different shapes, though; the Meta ad specs cheat sheet has the feed, Stories and carousel sizes, and the Instagram post size guide covers the 4:5 shape that also works for Facebook feed ads.

What we could not confirm

  • Facebook's help page gives 16:9 for desktop and 2.4:1 for mobile, which do not match its own 851 × 315 recommendation. We report both and design to the stricter case.
  • The 820 × 312 desktop and 640 × 360 mobile display sizes and the center safe zone come from third-party guides. Facebook does not publish them.
  • Facebook gives no desktop overlap in pixels for the profile picture; the roughly 40 px figure is for mobile. ContentStudio's 96 px desktop figure is third-party.
  • The help page describes Pages. That personal profiles share the size and crop is reported by ContentStudio, not confirmed by Facebook.
  • Facebook's group help page warns that mobile may not show the whole group cover, but its text does not say which edges are cut or by how much, so the Group preset has no safe-zone outline.
  • We found no statement that a cover over 100 KB is rejected, and no stated maximum width or height.

Facebook cover photo size FAQ

What size is a Facebook cover photo in 2026?

851 × 315 pixels as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB for fastest loading, with a 400 × 150 minimum, according to Facebook's help page for Page profile pictures and covers.

Why does my Facebook cover look cropped on my phone?

Facebook gives mobile a different frame (2.4:1) than desktop (16:9). Depending on whether you use Facebook's 2.4:1 or the 640 × 360 frame third parties report, our math puts the cut between about 47 and 145 px per side on an 851 px file. Keep key content in the center 560 px.

Is the Facebook banner size different for personal profiles?

ContentStudio says it is the same 851 × 315. Facebook's help page only documents Pages, so confirm with the preview when you upload.

What is the Facebook group cover size?

Facebook's group help page recommends 1,640 × 856 pixels (1.91:1) and warns that visitors on mobile may not see the entire image. Keep key content in the center and check the preview before saving.

Can I upload a larger cover than 851 × 315?

Facebook names 851 × 315 as the fastest-loading size and gives a minimum, but we found no stated maximum. A larger file with the same shape should crop the same way; it will also be harder to keep under 100 KB.

Should my cover photo be JPG or PNG?

JPG for photographs. Facebook says you may get a better result with a PNG for covers with a logo or text. Use sRGB color either way.

Where does the profile picture cover the cover photo?

On the left side. Facebook says the profile picture partly covers the left side of the cover and overlaps it by about 40 px on mobile; ContentStudio measures about 96 px in from the left and 96 px up from the bottom on desktop. Keep the lower-left corner free of text and logos.
