TikTok video size (2026): 1080 × 1920 px

A TikTok video should be 1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical ratio. TikTok's help pages give no organic upload size, so that is the convention; its ad spec sets 540 × 960 as the minimum for vertical video.

These bands use the low end of third-party estimates: about 130 px top, 250 px bottom and 120 px right (RecurPost, VidPros). Linearity's 'avoid the bottom 25%' works out to 480 px. TikTok publishes downloadable safe-zone templates for ads; these numbers are not from them.

A 3:4 tile shows 1080 × 1440 of a 1080 × 1920 cover: 480 px is cut in total, 240 px from the top and 240 px from the bottom, assuming a centered crop. The 3:4 figure is from a third-party source and approximate.

How TikTok shows your image

  • TikTok shows a 9:16 video full screen on phones. Other ratios are letterboxed with bars.
  • The caption, username and music line sit at the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons stack along the right edge.
  • For ads, TikTok says captions display in white in a fixed font that can't be customized.
  • The cover is picked from a frame of the video; RouteNote reports that the desktop uploader also accepts your own JPG or PNG cover, cropped to 3:4. The profile grid shows a shorter crop of the cover.

How to resize and upload

  1. 01Shoot or export vertical at 1080 × 1920. If your editor has a 9:16 preset, use it.
  2. 02For a cover, drop a frame or image into the resizer using the Vertical preset.
  3. 03Turn on Show safe zone and keep faces and text inside the dashed box.
  4. 04Download as JPG or PNG. For video, export MP4 from your editor at 1080 × 1920.
  5. 05In TikTok, pick the cover, then check how it sits in your profile grid once the video is posted.

Common mistakes to check before you post

  • Posting 16:9 footage as is. It is letterboxed into a thin strip of the screen. Reframe it to 9:16.
  • Putting text in the bottom quarter, where captions and the username overlap it.
  • Putting a call to action near the right edge, where buttons stack.
  • Exporting below 540 × 960 for an ad. That is TikTok's stated minimum.
  • Skipping the cover check. A 3:4 profile tile cuts about 240 px from the top and 240 px from the bottom of a 1080 × 1920 cover.
  • Exceeding 500 MB on an ad upload, or going under TikTok's 516 kbps minimum bitrate.

What TikTok actually publishes

TikTok's support pages do not state an organic upload spec. Its ad documentation does, for non-Spark in-feed ads: vertical 9:16 is recommended with a minimum of 540 × 960, horizontal 16:9 needs 960 × 540 and square needs 640 × 640. Files can be .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp or .avi, up to 500 MB, with a bitrate of at least 516 kbps and a duration up to 10 minutes (TikTok Ads Help).

1080 × 1920 is the common upload size because it is 9:16 at full HD. The tiktok.com pages that rank for this question are collections of user videos, not documentation, so we treat 1080 × 1920 as convention.

Worked example: the clear area

Using the low-end third-party bands (130 px top, 250 px bottom, 120 px right, from RecurPost and VidPros), the clear area of a 1080 × 1920 frame is (1080 − 120) × (1920 − 130 − 250) = 960 × 1540 px. That is 89% of the width and 80% of the height.

Linearity is stricter: avoid the bottom 25% and the right 15%. On 1920 px that bottom band is 480 px, so the clear height drops to 1920 − 130 − 480 = 1310 px, about 68%. Pixel figures vary by source, so for text that must be read, use the stricter value.

Cover and profile photo

TikTok publishes no cover size. In the app the cover is picked from a frame of the video, and RouteNote reports that the desktop uploader also takes a JPG or PNG cover cropped to 3:4. On a 1080 × 1920 cover, a centered 3:4 crop leaves 1080 × 1440 visible.

For the profile photo, TikTok's help page gives only a 20 × 20 minimum (TikTok Support). Third-party guides say it is shown as a circle, so keep the subject centered.

One caption box for TikTok, Reels and Shorts

If the same 1080 × 1920 video goes to TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, each app covers different edges. Meta's Reels ad guide keeps 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% at each side clear: 269, 672 and 65 px. Google's vertical template on its video ad specs page keeps 288 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom, 48 px on the left and 192 px on the right. The low-end TikTok estimates above are 130 px top, 250 px bottom and 120 px right.

Take the largest figure on each edge and one box clears all three: x = 65 to 888 and y = 288 to 1248, or 823 × 960 px. That is about 38% of the frame, enough for a caption and a logo but not a full layout. Meta's and Google's zones are written for ads, so for organic posts this is a cautious box.

The Instagram reel size and YouTube Shorts size guides explain each zone, and the Instagram story size guide covers the same 9:16 frame for stories.

What we could not confirm

  • TikTok's help pages give no organic upload size; 1080 × 1920 is convention.
  • Safe-zone figures (130 px top, 250 to 480 px bottom, 120 to 160 px right) are third-party estimates that vary by source and device. TikTok's own ad safe-zone templates are downloadable files that we did not measure.
  • The 3:4 cover crop comes from a third-party report about the desktop uploader and is approximate.
  • TikTok's profile photo page gives only a 20 × 20 minimum, with no recommended size or file types.
  • Organic duration and file-size limits change often and were not verified.
