Instagram profile picture size (2026): 320 × 320 px

An Instagram profile picture is 320 × 320 pixels (1:1), shown as a circle; Instagram publishes no size, so that figure is third-party. Upload a 1080 × 1080 square and keep the subject in the central 70%.

Safe zones and crops

Drawn to scale from the numbers above. Dashed boxes mark what stays visible; hatched areas are cut or covered.

What a circle crop keeps from a 320 × 320 square

What a circle crop keeps from a 320 × 320 squareFrame 320 by 320 pixels. Covered area: Corners clipped, 320 by 48 pixels at x 0, y 0. Safe area: Always visible: 224 × 224, 224 by 224 pixels at x 48, y 48.320 px320 pxCorners clippedAlways visible: 224 × 224

  • Always visible: 224 × 224
The circle touches the square at the middle of each edge, so the hatched frame is only partly lost. The dashed 224 px square sits fully inside the circle.

How Instagram shows your image

  • Instagram shows the picture as a circle, so the four corners of your square are removed. A square image is cropped to fit the circle, not shrunk.
  • Postfa.st puts the display size at about 110 px on mobile and 180 px on desktop web; First Pier also gives 110 px.
  • At 110 px a detailed logo or a group photo loses its detail, so one face or a simple mark works best.
  • You pick the crop in the app when you upload. Whatever you leave inside the circle is what viewers see.
  • The picture is the same on your profile, in search and next to your comments, so it needs to read at a very small size.

How to resize and upload

  1. 01Start from the largest square version of the picture you have, at least 320 × 320.
  2. 02Open the resizer above and drop the image in. Pick Profile 1080 × 1080 if you want a sharp file, or 320 × 320 to match the stored size.
  3. 03Drag the image so the face or mark sits in the middle. Detect subject centers a face for you.
  4. 04Turn on Show safe zone and keep everything important inside the dashed box. That box is the largest square that fits wholly inside the circle.
  5. 05Download as JPG for a photo or PNG for a logo with flat colors. Fill any transparent background first: we could not confirm how Instagram treats transparent areas.
  6. 06In Instagram, go to Edit profile, choose to change the photo and select the file. Check the circle preview before saving.

Common mistakes to check before you post

  • Using a wide logo or wordmark. In a circle, a 3:1 logo shrinks until it is unreadable, or its ends are cut off.
  • Placing text in the corners. A corner of a 320 px square is 226 px from the center, but the circle's radius is only 160 px.
  • Using a full-body or group photo. In a 110 px circle each face is a small fraction of that height.
  • Uploading a tiny image near Postfa.st's 110 × 110 minimum. It is enlarged and looks soft however you export it.
  • Choosing a background close to the page's color. The edge of the circle disappears in dark mode or on a white background.
  • Importing your Facebook picture without checking it. Instagram's help page says importing from Facebook reuses that exact picture, so check its crop first; see Facebook profile picture size.

How much of the square survives the circle

A circle inscribed in a square touches only the middle of each edge. On a 320 × 320 square the circle has a radius of 160 px and the corners sit 160 × √2 = 226 px from the center, so about 21% of the square's area is outside the circle: 1 − π ÷ 4 = 0.215.

A square placed in the center that fits fully inside the circle has a side of 320 ÷ √2 = 226 px, or 71% of the width. That is where the "central 70%" rule of thumb comes from. On a 1080 px upload the same square is 764 px, so use 756 px (70%) as a margin.

The check is simple to run: a point at x = 40, y = 40 from the top left is 160 − 40 = 120 px from each center axis, which is 170 px from the center, outside the 160 px radius. Anything there is cut.

What size to upload

The only figure we found for the stored size is 320 × 320, reported by Postfa.st, which recommends uploading 1080 × 1080. First Pier recommends uploading 320 × 320. Postfa.st says the picture is displayed at about 110 px on phones and 180 px on desktop web; First Pier gives 110 px.

Phones with a 3× pixel density draw a 110 px element with about 330 pixels, which is why 320 is a sensible stored size. We did this arithmetic ourselves; Instagram does not publish it.

Upload 1080 × 1080 so the downscale is clean, but there is no benefit above that if the stored copy is 320.

Profile pictures for a brand account

A mark that fits inside the dashed 756 px square on a 1080 px file stays inside the circle: that square's corners are 535 px from the center, against a 540 px radius. Shrink the mark a little more if you want space between it and the edge.

If the account also runs ads, the same mark can appear next to the ad as the page identity, so a recognisable mark helps there. For ad shapes, see the Meta ad specs cheat sheet, and for post shapes see Instagram post size.

What we could not confirm

  • Instagram does not publish a profile picture size on any page we could read, and Postfa.st says the same of Instagram's help page. The 320 × 320 stored size, the 1080 × 1080 upload advice and the 180 px desktop size come from Postfa.st; the 110 px mobile size appears in both Postfa.st and First Pier. Both are third-party.
  • The 110 px and 180 px display sizes vary by device and app version, and we did not test them on a range of devices.
  • We did not verify how Instagram treats transparent PNGs. Postfa.st gives a 30 MB upload limit; we could not confirm it on an Instagram page.
  • The 70% safe square and the circle arithmetic are geometry we computed, not Instagram guidance.

Instagram profile picture size FAQ

What is the Instagram profile picture size?

320 × 320 pixels, a 1:1 square, according to third-party guides. Instagram shows it as a circle at about 110 px on mobile and 180 px on desktop.

What size should I upload?

A square at least 320 × 320, the size First Pier recommends. Postfa.st recommends 1080 × 1080 for sharpness; Instagram scales it down.

Is the Instagram profile picture a circle or a square?

A circle. The four corners of your square are removed, so keep faces and text inside the central 70%.

Can I use a non-square photo?

Yes, but you crop it to a circle in the app. Crop it to a square first so you decide what is kept.

Why does my profile picture look blurry?

The source file is usually too small, so it is stretched. Start from a larger square and avoid heavy compression.

How do I fit a logo in an Instagram profile picture?

Put it on a square canvas and keep it inside the central 756 × 756 of a 1080 px file (70%). That square's corners sit 535 px from the center, inside the circle's 540 px radius, so nothing is clipped. Make a square version of a wide logo first.
