Etsy recommends 1600 × 400 pixels, a 4:1 ratio, for the big shop banner, with a minimum of 1200 × 300. The mini banner is a separate layout: 1600 × 213 recommended (about 7.5:1), with a 1200 × 160 minimum.

Etsy's two recommended sizes share a 1600 px width, so a mini banner cut from a 1600 × 400 big banner keeps 213 of 400 rows. With a centered crop, 93 rows go from the top and 94 from the bottom.

How Etsy shows your image

Etsy calls shop banners the largest branding asset for your shop and says the image appears on the standard website view and on mobile devices.
You pick one layout: Mini banner, Big banner, or None. None moves your listings higher up the page and leaves your logo as the main branding.
The recommended sizes share a 1600 px width; the big banner is 400 px tall and the mini 213 px, so the mini is about 47% shorter.
Etsy compresses uploaded images to speed up its pages, so a banner can look slightly less sharp than your file. It says image sizes are optimized for mobile displays and converts images to the sRGB color profile.
Etsy Plus subscribers also get Carousel banners (1200 × 300 recommended) and Collage banners, whose minimum depends on the number of images: 600 × 300 for 2, 400 × 300 for 3 and 300 × 300 for 4.
The order receipt banner is a separate image, minimum 760 × 100, set under Shop Manager > Settings > Info & Appearance.

How to resize and upload

01Choose a layout: Big banner for impact, Mini banner for more listings above the fold.
02In the resizer above, pick Big banner 4:1 (1600 × 400) or Mini banner (1600 × 213).
03Drop in artwork at least 1200 px wide, Etsy's minimum width for both banners; 1600 px, its recommendation, is better.
04Leave Crop to fill selected and turn on Show safe zone. On the big preset the dashed box shows the 213 px band that a mini banner keeps.
05Position your shop name, logo and product inside the safe zone so one design can serve both layouts.
06Download as JPG for photographs or PNG for flat artwork, with no transparent areas, since Etsy shows them as black.
07On Etsy.com, go to Shop Manager, select the pencil icon next to your shop name under Sales Channels, select Banner, choose the type and choose Done. Then view your shop on a phone and on a desktop.

Common mistakes to check before you post

Using 760 × 100. That is Etsy's minimum for the order receipt banner, and it is below the 1200 px minimum width for shop banners.
Uploading a transparent PNG. Etsy does not support transparency and shows transparent parts of an image as black; flatten it onto a background color first.
Uploading an animated GIF. Etsy says animated GIFs are not supported.
Cropping a 4:3 camera photo to 4:1 without checking. A 4:1 crop keeps only the middle 33% of a 4:3 photo's height.
Making the mini banner by squashing the big one. Resizing 1600 × 400 to 1600 × 213 without cropping squashes everything vertically by about 1.9 times; crop instead.
Treating 3360 × 840 as Etsy's requirement. Etsy's help recommends 1600 × 400; 3360 × 840 comes from third-party guides.

Big banner or mini banner?

Etsy's shop appearance help describes two banner styles: a big banner, a large image with a 1200 × 300 minimum, and a mini banner, a narrow image with a 1200 × 160 minimum. Etsy's image requirements page adds the recommended sizes: 1600 × 400 for the big banner and 1600 × 213 for the mini.

Pick the big banner when the banner itself sells your brand: a lifestyle photo, a seasonal sale, a set of products. Pick the mini banner when you would rather have listings start higher on the page.

Both recommended sizes are 1600 px wide, so you can design one artwork and use two crops. The diagram above shows how much a big banner loses when cut down to the mini.

Worked example: one artwork for both banners

Start from Etsy's big banner recommendation: 1600 × 400, a 4:1 ratio. The mini minimum is 1200 × 160, a 7.5:1 ratio, and at 1600 px wide a 7.5:1 strip is 1600 ÷ 7.5 = 213.3 px tall, which matches Etsy's 1600 × 213 mini recommendation.

So a mini banner cut from your big banner keeps 213 of its 400 rows. The other 187 rows are cut: 93 from the top and 94 from the bottom if the crop is centered.

Safe band for both banners: rows 93 to 306 of a 1600 × 400 canvas.
At the 1200 × 300 minimum: rows 70 to 230 (300 ÷ 2 ± 80).
At 3360 × 840: rows 196 to 644, a 448 px band.
Check: 213 ÷ 400 = 53%, 160 ÷ 300 = 53% and 448 ÷ 840 = 53%, so the proportions match.

How to design inside a 4:1 strip

A 4:1 canvas is very short. A person's face at the height of the frame takes up most of it, so wide scenes, flat lays and a row of products work better than portraits.

Put the shop name on the left or in the center, large, with strong contrast against the background.
Our rule of thumb, not an Etsy rule: keep a margin of about 5% of the width at both ends.
Use a plain or softly blurred background behind text. Busy product photos fight with lettering.
Keep the same color palette as your listing photos so the banner and the grid look related.

Banner file types and quality

Etsy supports .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic for shop images. Animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported, and transparent areas appear black. Use JPG for photographs and PNG for logos and flat artwork.

Etsy gives no file-size limit for banners. Its only size warning is about listing photos: files larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection. If a banner upload stalls, lower the JPG quality in the resizer and download again; the resizer shows the file size next to the Download button.

If colors look wrong after upload, convert the file to sRGB before uploading. Etsy converts images to sRGB, and CMYK is meant for print.

Where does 3360 × 840 come from?

Many size guides, Printify's among them, give 3360 × 840 as the official Etsy big banner. Etsy's current help does not list it; it recommends 1600 × 400. The two have the same 4:1 shape, and 3360 × 840 is 2.1 times larger in each direction.

Uploading 3360 × 840 is not wrong, but it adds pixels Etsy does not ask for, and a 2.8-megapixel photo is harder to keep small as a JPG. Etsy compresses uploads anyway, so starting from its own 1600 × 400 is the simpler choice.

What we could not confirm

Etsy's help pages refuse ordinary page fetches, so we read both articles in full through Etsy's help-center API on 2026-10-05. Both were last edited in May 2026.
Etsy does not say how it scales or crops a banner on phones versus desktop. Moda says the visible crop is shallower on a phone; we could not confirm that on an Etsy page.
Etsy gives no file-size limit for banners. Its 1 MB warning is about listing photos; Moda describes 1 MB as a banner upload ceiling, which we could not confirm.
Whether Etsy centers the crop when an image does not match the banner shape is not documented. The mini crop in the diagram assumes a centered crop, which is what this page's resizer does.
3360 × 840 appears in third-party guides but not in Etsy's current help, and we could not find where it originated.
