Discord banner size (2026): 960 × 540 px
A Discord server banner is 960 × 540 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, and Discord resizes a 1920 × 1080 upload for you. A profile banner is a different upload: 680 × 240 pixels at minimum (17:6), PNG, JPG or animated GIF, under 10 MB.

Discord banner size: every format and limit
| Format | Size (px) | Ratio | Minimum / maximum | File types and limit | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Server banner (recommended)Discord's wording: the recommended size for a server banner is 960x540 with a 16:9 ratio, and uploads should be at least that size. Banners unlock at Boosting Level 2; Discord Partner servers get them without boosting. | 960 × 540 | 16:9 | Min: 960 × 540 px | Image or GIF (animated needs Boosting Level 3) | Discord Support: Server BannersPlatform's own page |
| Server banner, 2x fileDiscord: have a 1920x1080 image handy? Upload that and we'll automatically resize it for you. Exactly twice the recommended size, so the layout stays the same. | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Not stated | Image or GIF | Discord Support: Server BannersPlatform's own page |
| Profile banner (minimum)Discord gives a minimum, not a recommended size. Only Nitro members can upload an image or animated GIF banner, and Discord shows a crop step after upload. | 680 × 240 | 17:6 | Min: 680 × 240 px | PNG, JPG, animated GIFLimit: 10 MB | Discord Support: Custom ProfilesPlatform's own page |
| Profile banner, 2x fileOur suggestion, not a Discord number: twice the 680 × 240 minimum, so the banner stays sharp on high-density screens and still sits under the 10 MB limit as a JPG. | 1360 × 480 | 17:6 | Not stated | PNG, JPG, animated GIFLimit: 10 MB | Discord Support: Custom Profiles (limits only)Secondary source |

How Discord shows your image
- Server banners and profile banners are separate settings. A server banner belongs to the server and appears at the top of its channel list; a profile banner belongs to your account and appears on your profile card.
- Discord's own banner guidelines: keep the top 48 px of the file fairly simple so the server name stays readable, avoid images with a logo or text in them, and use key art, character stills or subtle background art.
- The channel list is a narrow sidebar, so the banner is drawn much smaller than 960 px wide. Discord does not publish the displayed size.
- Animated server banners play for 5 seconds when the server first loads, then pause. They play again for 5 seconds when the banner scrolls back into view, and on hover. With reduced motion turned on they do not animate.
- A server can hold only one banner image. If a Level 3 server drops to Level 2, an animated banner becomes static using the same image.
- On the profile card the avatar sits over the lower-left edge of the banner. That is how the app looks today; Discord does not document it or give an overlap size, so keep important content to the right and centre.
- When you upload a profile banner, Discord shows a crop step. Skip applies its default crop.
How to resize and upload
- 01Decide which banner you are making. A server banner needs Boosting Level 2 (Level 3 for animated); a profile banner is for your own account and needs Nitro.
- 02Pick the matching preset in the resizer: Server banner 2x (1920 × 1080) for servers, Profile banner 2x (1360 × 480) for profiles.
- 03Drop in your artwork. The resizer exports still images only, so for an animated banner use it to plan the frame, then build the GIF in an editor at the same size.
- 04Use Crop to fill and drag the image until the subject is where you want it. Detect subject can place the crop for you.
- 05For a server banner, keep the top 48 px plain, as Discord advises. For a profile banner, keep faces away from the lower-left, where the avatar sits. Use Fit inside if nothing may be cut and pick Blurred photo or Solid color for the fill.
- 06Download as PNG for flat art or JPG for photos. A profile banner must be under 10 MB; Discord states no file limit for server banners.
- 07In Discord, a server banner is set under Server Settings > Overview, at the bottom of the page under Server Banner Background (Discord's help wording). A profile banner is under User Settings > Profiles > Change Banner. Check the preview, or the crop step, before you save.
Common mistakes to check before you post
- Uploading the 680 × 240 profile shape as a server banner. It is 17:6, not 16:9, and only 240 px tall, below the 960 × 540 Discord asks for; start from 960 × 540 or 1920 × 1080 instead.
- Reusing one 16:9 server banner as a profile banner without checking the slice. A 17:6 crop keeps only about 339 of 540 rows, so a logo placed near the top or bottom edge vanishes.
- Putting the name or logo in the lower-left of a profile banner, where the avatar sits.
- Using old numbers. Some guides still quote 600 × 240 for profile banners; Discord's current help page says 680 × 240.
- Putting text or a logo in a server banner. Discord's guidelines say to avoid both, and the server name is drawn over the top 48 px, so a busy top edge makes it hard to read.
- Expecting banners to appear on any server. Server banners need Boosting Level 2 (or a Partner server) and profile banners need Nitro, so a perfectly sized file is not enough on its own.
Server banner or profile banner: which one do you need?
A server banner is the image at the top of a server's channel list. Discord's Server Banners page gives 960 × 540 at 16:9 as the recommended size and says a 1920 × 1080 image is resized for you. Banners unlock at Boosting Level 2, animated banners at Level 3, and Discord Partner servers get banners without boosting. Server owners and roles with Manage Server or Administrator permission can change it.
A profile banner is the strip behind your avatar on your own profile card. Discord's Custom Profiles page says banners must be PNG, JPG or animated GIF files under 10 MB, with minimum dimensions of 680 × 240 pixels, and only Nitro members can upload an image or animated GIF banner.
The two shapes are not interchangeable: 16:9 is 1.78 wide for every 1 tall, 17:6 is 2.83. Design each one on its own canvas.
Worked example: turning one server banner into a profile banner
Say you built a 1920 × 1080 server banner and want the same artwork on your profile. A profile banner is 17:6, so the crop keeps the full 1920 px width and a height of 1920 × 6 ÷ 17 = 677.6 px, about 678 rows out of 1080.
That cuts 402 rows: about 201 from the top and 201 from the bottom if the crop is centred, the same proportion shown in the diagram above. Anything in the top 201 rows of your artwork is gone from the profile version.
- Check: 1920 ÷ 2.8333 = 677.6, and 1080 − 678 = 402 rows cut in total.
- Fix: put the important content between rows 201 and 879 of a 1920 × 1080 file, or build the profile banner separately at 1360 × 480.
- Downscale check: 1920 × 1080 halves to 960 × 540 exactly, and 1360 × 480 halves to 680 × 240 exactly, so both 2x files keep the same layout as the base sizes.
Animated Discord banners
Animated server banners need Boosting Level 3, and Discord recommends the same 960 × 540 (16:9) size as a still banner. For profiles, animated GIF banners are allowed under the same 10 MB limit and need Nitro.
Discord's Server Banners page does not state a file-size limit for server banners. If an upload is refused, shrink the GIF first: fewer frames and a narrower colour palette usually cut size more than reducing pixel dimensions.
Design for the paused state. Discord says an animated server banner plays for 5 seconds when the server loads and then pauses, and does not animate at all for people with reduced motion turned on. Discord does not say which frame it pauses on, so make every frame work as a still.
Why a Discord banner looks soft, and how to fix it
Most soft banners are small files stretched up. Start at or above the size Discord asks for (960 × 540 for servers, 680 × 240 for profiles) so the app never has to enlarge your file.
- Start from the largest original you have, and export at 1920 × 1080 for servers or 1360 × 480 for profiles.
- Use PNG for flat colour and illustration, and JPG for photographs.
- Leave text out of server banners, as Discord advises. The banner is drawn small in the sidebar and the server name already sits over the top edge.
- On a profile banner, if you add text, make it large and put it on a flat or blurred area away from the avatar.
What we could not confirm
- Discord's help pages refuse ordinary page fetches, so we read both articles in full through Discord's help-centre API on 2026-10-05. The Server Banners article was last edited in May 2022, so its menu path (Server Settings > Overview > Server Banner Background) may not match the app exactly today.
- Discord does not state a maximum file size for server banners, or which still-image formats it accepts for them (the page says only image or GIF). Guides often cite 10 MB; we could not find that on a Discord page.
- Discord does not say whether it crops a non-16:9 server banner or how, or which frame an animated banner pauses on.
- Discord does not publish the avatar overlap on profile banners or the on-screen size of the server banner in the channel list. Our advice to keep content right of centre is a design precaution, not a measured safe area.
- Some third-party guides still quote 600 × 240 for profile banners. Discord's current help page says 680 × 240; we did not find a Discord changelog explaining the difference.
- 1360 × 480 is our own doubling of the 680 × 240 profile minimum. Discord names 1920 × 1080 only for server banners.
Discord banner size FAQ
What size is a Discord server banner?
960 × 540 pixels at 16:9 is Discord's recommended server banner size, and also the minimum it asks for. Discord says it automatically resizes a 1920 × 1080 image, so uploading the 2x file is fine.
What size is a Discord profile banner?
At least 680 × 240 pixels (17:6), as a PNG, JPG or animated GIF under 10 MB. Discord states a minimum rather than a recommended size, so a 1360 × 480 file is a safe way to stay sharp.
Can I use the same image for both banners?
You can, but a 16:9 server banner loses about 100 rows from the top and bottom when cropped to the 17:6 profile shape. Build the profile version separately or keep key content in the middle 339 rows of a 960 × 540 design.
Why can't I upload a Discord banner?
Banners are gated. A server banner needs Boosting Level 2 (Level 3 for an animated one) unless it is a Discord Partner server, and you need to be the owner or have Manage Server or Administrator permission. Image or GIF profile banners need Nitro. Check those before you troubleshoot the file.
Is 1920 × 1080 too big for a Discord banner?
No. Discord says that if you have a 1920 × 1080 image you can upload it and Discord will resize it automatically. It is the 2x version of 960 × 540, so the layout is unchanged.
Do animated Discord server banners keep playing?
No. Discord says an animated server banner plays for 5 seconds when the server loads and then pauses. It plays again for 5 seconds when the banner scrolls back into view and on hover, and does not animate for people with reduced motion turned on.
