How Facebook shows your image
- Facebook says a Page profile picture is cropped to a circle and displayed at 176 × 176 on computers, 196 × 196 on smartphones and 36 × 36 on most feature phones.
- The square's four corners are lost to the circle, so nothing important belongs in them.
- The picture also appears beside your posts and comments, often smaller than 176 px; Facebook does not publish those sizes. Detail that reads at 176 px may not at 36 px.
- On mobile the profile picture overlaps the cover photo by about 40 pixels, according to the same help page.
- Guides that quote 170 × 170 and 128 × 128 are repeating Facebook's older Page figures from 2019. Facebook's help page now gives 176 and 196.
How to resize and upload
- 01Choose Profile 320 × 320, Facebook's stated size for best quality, or Larger 640 × 640 to keep a higher-resolution copy, then drop in your photo or logo.
- 02Use Crop to fill for a face and drag until the eyes sit near the upper middle. For a logo, use Fit inside with a solid background.
- 03Turn on Show safe zone. Keep the whole face or logo inside the box so the circular crop cannot clip it.
- 04Zoom your browser out until the preview is thumbnail-sized, and check you can still tell who or what it is.
- 05Download PNG for a logo or text, which Facebook says may give a better result, or JPG for a photo.
- 06Upload it and look at the circle in the preview. Move it if the face is off-center.
- 07Check the result on a phone and on a computer, and next to a comment, where it appears small.
Common mistakes to check before you post
- Using a wide logo. Fitted into a square and then a circle, the edges are lost or the mark becomes tiny; make a square version.
- Putting a face in a corner. The circle removes the corners, so a person standing at the edge gets half-cut.
- Adding small text. On a feature phone the picture is shown at about a ninth of its 320 px size, so lettering that looks bold in the file turns into a smudge; the worked example below has the numbers.
- Uploading below 320 px. Facebook states 320 × 320 for best quality, so a smaller file falls short of its own recommendation.
- Repeating the profile picture inside the cover photo. They sit together on the page, and the repeat wastes space.
- Ignoring the overlap. On mobile the profile picture overlaps the cover by about 40 px; check the cover's bottom-left corner.
What size should a Facebook profile picture be?
Facebook's help page says a Page profile picture should be 320 pixels wide and 320 pixels tall for best quality, and that it is cropped to a circle. Upload a square, so the circle has an even crop on every side.
That page covers Pages only; we found no Facebook page for personal profiles. Many guides still quote 170 × 170 on computers and 128 × 128 on smartphones. Those are Facebook's older Page figures (2019 copy of the help page), since raised to 176 and 196. A 320 px square covers both.
Worked example: text at 176, 196 and 36 px
Facebook shows the same 320 px file at 176 px on computers, 196 px on smartphones and 36 px on most feature phones. The scale factors are 176 ÷ 320 = 0.55, 196 ÷ 320 = 0.61 and 36 ÷ 320 = 0.11.
So a letter 20 px tall in your file is about 11 px on a computer, 12 px on a smartphone and 2 px on a feature phone. To stay 10 px tall even at 36 px, a letter would need to be about 89 px tall in the file, more than a quarter of its height. That is why most profile pictures carry no text at all.
What survives the circle
The circle removes the corners. The largest square wholly inside it is 320 ÷ √2 = 226 px, starting 47 px in from each edge (x and y from 47 to 273), which is the box the resizer draws. The circle shows a little more than that at the middle of each side, so the box is a cautious limit for text and logos; a face can sit slightly outside it as long as the chin and the top of the head stay in the circle.
A close crop of a face or a single-color logo on a solid background still reads at 36 px. A full-body photo or a logo with a tagline does not.
Profile picture and cover photo together
The two sit together at the top of your page. Facebook says the profile picture overlaps the cover by about 40 px on mobile. Plan the cover so its bottom-left corner holds nothing important.
The Facebook cover photo size guide shows the cover's crop on desktop and mobile. If you run Meta ads, the Meta ad specs cheat sheet lists the image shapes for each placement.
What we could not confirm
- Facebook's help page documents Page profile pictures only. We found no Facebook figure for personal profiles, so we assume the same 320 × 320 works for them.
- Facebook gives no maximum size or file-size limit for profile pictures that we could find.
- We could not confirm the exact diameter of the circle crop versus the square, so the 226 px box is an inscribed-square calculation, not a Facebook number.
- We did not confirm whether Facebook's upload flow re-centers or lets you reposition the picture in every app version.
Facebook profile picture size FAQ
What size should a Facebook profile picture be?
320 × 320 pixels for best quality, per Facebook's help page for Pages. It is a square that displays as a circle.
What size does a Facebook profile picture display at?
For Pages, 176 × 176 on computers, 196 × 196 on smartphones and 36 × 36 on most feature phones, per Facebook. The 170 × 170 and 128 × 128 in many guides are Facebook's older Page figures.
Is a Facebook profile picture round or square?
You upload a square, and Facebook shows it cropped to a circle.
Can I upload a bigger picture than 320 × 320?
Facebook gives 320 × 320 as the size for best quality and we found no stated maximum. A larger square should work, but keep the subject in the center.
How do I stop my profile picture being cut off?
Keep everything important inside the central 226 × 226 box of a 320 px picture, or the equivalent for a larger file. The resizer's safe-zone toggle draws it.
How much does the profile picture overlap the cover photo?
About 40 px on mobile, according to Facebook's help page, which gives no desktop figure. Keep the bottom-left corner of your cover free of anything important.
