Meta's Facebook Stories video ad guide asks for roughly 14% (250 px) at the top and 20% (340 px) at the bottom to stay free of text and logos. Applied to a 1080 × 1920 organic Story, that leaves 1330 px of height.

If an image is ever shown in a square frame, a 4:5 file loses 135 px from the top and bottom. This is a design precaution, not a Facebook-documented crop.

How Facebook shows your image

  • Meta publishes ad specs and link-preview specs, but we found no current organic photo post spec. The sizes here pair Meta's guides with third-party guides.
  • At the same width, a 4:5 image is 25% taller than a square and more than twice as tall as a 1.91:1 landscape, so it takes more of a phone feed.
  • Link posts show a card built from the page's og:image. Meta says that without Open Graph tags its crawler uses internal heuristics to guess the preview image, so set the tag explicitly.
  • Stories are full-screen vertical, and Facebook's interface sits over the top and bottom of the picture.
  • Thumbnails in galleries and photo grids may crop an image; we could not confirm exactly how.

How to resize and upload

  1. 01Pick the preset: Portrait 4:5 for photos and graphics, Link preview for the image behind a shared URL, Story for full-screen vertical.
  2. 02Start from an image at least 1080 px wide for a post, or at least 1200 × 630 for a link preview, the size Meta's developer docs give for high-resolution displays.
  3. 03With Crop to fill, drag the picture or use the arrow keys until the subject is placed well. Detect subject can do this for you.
  4. 04Turn on Show safe zone. For posts, keep text inside the box so a square crop would not cut it; for Stories, keep text out of the top and bottom bands.
  5. 05Use Fit inside with a blurred background if nothing may be cut, for example a full group photo.
  6. 06Download JPG for photos or PNG for text-heavy graphics. Keep a link preview image under Meta's 8 MB limit, and give a replacement preview a new URL, since Meta caches images by URL.
  7. 07Upload it, and look at the composer preview on a phone before you publish.

Common mistakes to check before you post

  • Posting a 1200 × 630 landscape as a photo post. On a phone it takes under half the height of a 4:5 image, so the post shrinks in the feed.
  • Using Story artwork in the feed. Meta's placement guide does not list 9:16 for Facebook Feed ads, and how Facebook trims a 9:16 organic post is not documented, so check the preview.
  • Putting captions in the top 250 px or bottom 340 px of a Story. Meta's Stories video ad guide asks you to keep those bands free of text, and its image ad guide asks for more.
  • Leaving the link preview to chance. Without Open Graph tags, Meta's crawler guesses the preview image, which may not be the one you want.
  • Exporting at 4000 px wide. The upload is slower, and no phone screen shows that many pixels across.
  • Using 1080 × 1080 text graphics for both feed and Stories. The square sits in the middle of a 9:16 frame with empty space above and below.

Which Facebook post size should you use?

Use 1080 × 1350 (4:5) for photos and graphics. Meta's ad guide for Facebook Feed recommends 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 for image ads, and a 4:5 image is taller than a square or landscape one, so it takes more of a phone screen. We found no matching organic page from Facebook, so for organic posts this is our recommendation, not a Facebook requirement.

Use 1080 × 1080 (1:1) when the same image must also work on platforms that favor squares. Use 1200 × 630 (1.91:1) only as a link preview image, not as a photo.

One export can serve organic and paid: a 1080 × 1350 file has the shape of a feed ad and clears the 600 px minimum width. See Facebook ad size for every Facebook ad placement, or the Meta ad specs cheat sheet to compare Facebook and Instagram side by side.

Worked example: 1080 × 1350 into a square frame

A square frame at the same width is 1080 px tall. The 1350 px image is 270 px taller, so 270 ÷ 2 = 135 px is cut from the top and from the bottom if it is centered. Anything inside y = 135 to y = 1215 survives.

That is the safe zone the resizer draws. It costs you nothing in the feed, where the full 4:5 image shows, and it protects you wherever a square thumbnail appears.

Link preview images

When you paste a URL, Facebook builds a card from the page's og:image tag. Meta's developer docs say to use images of at least 1200 × 630 for the best display on high-resolution devices, and to keep close to 1.91:1 so the full image shows in Feed without cropping. Below 600 × 315 the image still shows, but much smaller; the minimum allowed is 200 × 200, and the file must not exceed 8 MB.

Keep words in the center of the card and give the edges a margin; the resizer's link preset outlines a 5% margin (our choice, not Meta's). Meta caches images by URL, so to change a published preview image, give the new image a new URL. Meta's Sharing Debugger guidance says the debugger shows which tags the crawler reads and triggers a fresh scrape of the page.

Facebook Story size and safe area

Organic Stories are 1080 × 1920 (9:16) per SocialSizes, which says Facebook's interface covers the top and bottom but gives no pixel figures. Meta's Facebook Stories video ad guide says to leave roughly 14% (250 px) at the top and 20% (340 px) at the bottom free of text and logos. Using those pixel figures on a 1080 × 1920 file leaves a band of 1920 − 250 − 340 = 1330 px.

Meta's Facebook Stories image ad guide is stricter: roughly 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side. On 1080 × 1920 that is about 269 px, 672 px and 65 px. If the same Story artwork will also run as an ad, or on Instagram, design to that larger zone.

Keeping photos sharp

Export at the width you need and no more. A file far larger than any screen it appears on adds upload time without adding visible detail.

  • Start from the biggest original and downscale once, in the resizer.
  • Use PNG for graphics with small text, JPG for photos.
  • Avoid screenshots of screenshots; each pass loses detail.

What we could not confirm

  • Facebook has no current help page we could find that states an organic post image size. 1080 × 1350 is derived from the 4:5 shape in Meta's ad guide. An older Facebook help page that listed 720, 960 and 2048 px widths for regular photos now returns 'This page isn't available', so we do not use those numbers.
  • The 250 px and 340 px Story bands are Meta's numbers for Stories video ads. We apply them to organic Stories. Meta pairs them with 14% and 20%, which on a 1920 px tall Story would be about 269 px and 384 px, so the percentages give a little more margin.
  • Meta's Facebook Stories image ad page asks for a larger bottom zone (35%) than its video page (20%). We could not find which applies to organic Stories.
  • The Stockimg guide we cite recommends 1200 × 630 for timeline photos and does not mention 4:5. We recommend 4:5 for phone feed space because Meta's own ad guide uses that shape; this is our judgment, not a Facebook rule for organic posts.
  • We could not confirm exactly how Facebook crops images in galleries or square thumbnails, so the square-safe zone is a precaution.
  • No official maximum file size for organic photos was found; the 30 MB limit is documented for ads.

Facebook post size FAQ

What is the best size for a Facebook post image?

1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) for photos and graphics. We found no Facebook page with an organic post size, and 4:5 is the shape Meta recommends for feed ads.

What size is a Facebook link preview image?

At least 1200 × 630 pixels, as close to 1.91:1 as possible, set via the og:image tag on the linked page. That is from Meta's developer docs, which also give an 8 MB file limit.

What size is a Facebook Story?

1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16), per third-party guides. Keep text out of roughly the top 250 px and bottom 340 px, per Meta's Stories video ad guide; its image ad guide asks for 14% top, 35% bottom and 6% per side.

Can I post a square image on Facebook?

Yes. Square 1080 × 1080 images post normally, and Meta's placement guide lists 1:1 as supported for Facebook Feed ads. At the same width, a 4:5 image is 270 px taller.

Is a Facebook post size the same as a Facebook ad size?

The shapes match, but ads have official limits: Meta recommends 1440 × 1800, at least 600 px wide, up to 30 MB, JPG or PNG. A 1080 × 1350 post works as an ad too; the Facebook ad size guide covers carousel, video, Stories and right-column specs.

How do I change a Facebook link preview image?

Meta caches images by URL, so publish the new image at a new URL and point the page's og:image tag at it. Meta's Sharing Debugger shows which tags its crawler reads and triggers a fresh scrape.
