YouTube thumbnail size (2026): 1280 × 720 px

Make a YouTube thumbnail 1280 × 720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, as a JPG or PNG. YouTube's help page now lists 3840 × 2160 with a minimum width of 640 px, so 1280 × 720 is the practical size: sharp, and small enough as a JPG to stay under the 2 MB limit for uploads from a phone.

How YouTube shows your image

  • Thumbnails appear at very different widths: large on a TV or in an embedded player, small in a phone feed, and smaller still in the up-next list. Design for the smallest one.
  • The video length badge is drawn over the lower-right corner of the thumbnail. Anything you place there is partly hidden.
  • YouTube says the custom thumbnail is also used as the preview image in the embedded player.
  • For vertical videos, YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages. Your custom thumbnail still appears on the watch feed, in watch history and on non-mobile platforms.
  • YouTube asks for 16:9 on videos but does not document how other shapes are fitted into the frame, so upload the exact ratio instead of relying on YouTube to adjust it.

How to resize and upload

  1. 01Choose Thumbnail 16:9 in the resizer above for 1280 × 720, or Thumbnail 4K if you want the largest size YouTube lists and your file stays small enough.
  2. 02Drop in your source image. A 1920 × 1080 frame grab or design file works well; a 640 px wide screenshot meets YouTube's minimum but looks soft on a TV.
  3. 03Keep Crop to fill selected and drag the frame until the face or main object is clear of the lower-right corner. Detect subject can set a starting point.
  4. 04Turn on Show safe zone and keep text inside the dashed box, which stays clear of the duration badge.
  5. 05Download as JPG if the thumbnail contains a photo or a face, which typically keeps a 1280 × 720 file well under the 2 MB phone limit. Use PNG only for flat graphics with no photo.
  6. 06Check the file size. YouTube allows 2 MB for thumbnails uploaded from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. If the file is too large, download the JPG instead of the PNG.
  7. 07In YouTube Studio, select Content, open the video, click Upload file under Thumbnail, then Save. YouTube says custom thumbnails require a verified account. Then shrink your browser window or check on a phone to judge it at feed size.

Common mistakes to check before you post

  • Uploading a 4K thumbnail from a phone and hitting the 2 MB mobile limit. A 3840 × 2160 PNG of a photo is often many times larger than that; export a JPG or drop to 1280 × 720.
  • Putting a headline in the bottom-right corner, directly under the duration badge.
  • Using 12 to 15 words of text. At 168 px wide, a headline has to be about 150 px tall on the canvas to stay near 20 px, which leaves room for only a few words.
  • Uploading a square or 4:3 image and hoping YouTube will fit it. YouTube asks for 16:9 and does not say how other shapes are handled.
  • Using a screenshot of the video at 640 px wide. That is the stated minimum, and it will look soft on a large screen.
  • Skipping a mobile check. A thumbnail that reads well on a 27-inch monitor can be illegible in a phone feed.

Which YouTube thumbnail size should you use?

Upload 1280 × 720 (16:9). It is the long-standing standard, it is sharp at the sizes where thumbnails are seen, and a JPG at that size is typically well under the 2 MB limit that applies to uploads from a phone.

The current YouTube help page says something different: 3840 × 2160 for videos and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 px (minimum height 640 px for Shorts), and advises making the image "as large as possible". Many third-party guides still quote 1280 × 720 with a 2 MB cap, and Google's video ad specs page still lists 1280 × 720 as the recommended YouTube thumbnail resolution. Both are workable: 4K is allowed, 1280 × 720 is enough, and the file-size limit is what decides.

Pick 4K only when you upload from a computer and the image is simple enough to compress well. A photo-heavy 4K file can easily exceed 2 MB, and a thumbnail that fails to upload is worth less than a smaller one that does.

A thumbnail is video art. Channel art is a separate upload with different rules: the YouTube banner size guide covers the 2560 × 1440 banner and the narrow strip of it that every device shows.

The file size limits, in plain terms

YouTube's help page says the limit depends on the device you upload from. From a phone (YouTube's "mobile"), video thumbnails can be up to 2 MB and podcast thumbnails up to 10 MB. From a computer ("desktop"), video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails can be up to 50 MB. Older sources mention only the 2 MB figure. The page names JPG and PNG as example formats (YouTube Help).

File size depends on the image, so check yours before uploading. Busy photos compress best as JPG; PNG keeps flat color and sharp text but is usually the larger file, and it is the format most likely to cross the 2 MB mobile limit.

  • Photos and faces: export JPG.
  • Flat colors and sharp text with no photo: PNG is fine at 1280 × 720.
  • A file over 2 MB: lower the JPG quality a notch or resize down. Do not change the aspect ratio.

A worked example: will your text survive at feed size?

Suppose a thumbnail is shown in a phone feed card about 360 px wide. Scale is 360 ÷ 1280 = 0.28. A headline 160 px tall on your 1280 × 720 canvas becomes 160 × 0.28 = about 45 px, which is easy to read. In the narrow up-next list, say a card 168 px wide, scale is 168 ÷ 1280 = 0.13, and the same headline is about 21 px. Text 60 px tall drops to about 8 px, which is not readable.

The card widths here are illustrative, since YouTube's layouts change by device and window size and the help page does not publish them. The arithmetic is what matters: multiply your text height by the display width divided by 1280. Then judge whether it is at least roughly 20 px at the smallest size you care about.

Keeping content clear of the duration badge

YouTube draws the video length in a small badge over the lower-right corner. The official help page does not give its size or position. Using an approximate 220 × 110 px zone on a 1280 × 720 canvas, a safe area that avoids it is the rectangle from the top-left corner down to 1060 px across and 610 px down. The resizer's Show safe zone toggle draws that rectangle.

That zone is our approximation and not a YouTube specification. If your thumbnail has a face on the left and the headline on the right, move the headline up rather than down.

Thumbnails for Shorts and vertical videos

YouTube lists a separate size for Shorts: 2160 × 3840 (9:16) with a minimum height of 640 px, as a JPG or PNG (YouTube Help). Shorts thumbnails can currently be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer, so the 50 MB desktop limit is the one that applies. For a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages, so keep the main subject in the middle of the 16:9 image.

What we could not confirm

  • The 1280 × 720 figure is not printed on YouTube's current creator help page, which lists 3840 × 2160. Google's video ad specs page still lists 1280 × 720 as recommended, but it also gives a 1280 × 640 minimum that conflicts with YouTube's 640 px minimum width; we follow YouTube's help page for the minimum.
  • YouTube says the file limit depends on whether you upload on mobile or desktop. It does not define those terms further; we read them as uploading from a phone versus a computer.
  • YouTube does not publish the size or position of the duration badge. Our safe zone is an approximation based on how thumbnails look, and it will not match every screen.
  • The display widths in the worked example are illustrations. YouTube does not document the rendered widths of its feed, sidebar or embedded player cards.
  • YouTube does not say how a thumbnail that is not 16:9 (or 9:16 for Shorts) is fitted into the frame.
  • The 1080 × 1080 podcast size is our suggestion. YouTube specifies only the 1:1 ratio.

YouTube thumbnail size FAQ

What is the best YouTube thumbnail size?

1280 × 720 pixels at 16:9, as a JPG or PNG. YouTube's help page lists 3840 × 2160 with a 640 px minimum width, but 1280 × 720 is sharp enough and as a JPG typically stays under the 2 MB mobile limit.

What is the minimum YouTube thumbnail size?

640 pixels wide for videos, and 640 pixels tall for Shorts, according to YouTube's help page. Keep the 16:9 ratio for standard videos.

What is the maximum thumbnail file size?

YouTube lists 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded from a phone and 50 MB for uploads from a computer. Podcast thumbnails get 10 MB on a phone. Older guides mention only 2 MB.

Should I upload thumbnails in 4K?

You can, since YouTube lists 3840 × 2160, but it is rarely necessary. A detailed 4K file can exceed 2 MB, and the thumbnail is seen at small sizes most of the time. 1280 × 720 or 1920 × 1080 is usually enough.

What aspect ratio is a YouTube thumbnail?

16:9 for standard videos, 9:16 for Shorts, and 1:1 for podcast playlists, according to YouTube's help page.

Where should I keep text on a thumbnail?

Away from the lower-right corner, where the video length is drawn, and large enough to read at about 170 px wide. The resizer's safe zone shows an approximate clear area.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail?

YouTube says custom thumbnails require a verified account. If the account is verified, check the file: JPG or PNG, at least 640 px wide (640 px tall for Shorts), and no more than 2 MB when you upload from a phone or 50 MB from a computer.
