How YouTube shows your image
- YouTube says the image renders at 98 × 98 px, and that the profile picture is shown on your channel, your videos and your public actions across YouTube.
- Comments, search results and feeds show it smaller. Third-party guides put that at roughly 20 to 50 px depending on the surface.
- Channel avatars are displayed as circles, so a square upload loses its corners.
- YouTube's upload dialog crops to a square you can move and resize, so a wide or tall image loses its edges. Crop it to a square yourself first.
- Animated GIFs are not allowed.
- YouTube says it may take a few minutes for a new profile picture to update across YouTube.
How to resize and upload
- 01Choose Profile 800 × 800 in the resizer above.
- 02Drop in your logo or photo, ideally 800 px or more on its shortest side, so the export is a downscale rather than an enlargement.
- 03Use Crop to fill, and drag the image so the face or logo is centered. For a logo with its own shape, use Fit inside with a solid background.
- 04Turn on Show safe zone. Keep the face, logo or lettering inside the dashed square.
- 05Download as PNG for logos or JPG for photos. Both are on YouTube's accepted list, and an 800 × 800 file is far below the 15 MB limit.
- 06Open YouTube Studio and go to Customization > Profile. Next to the profile picture, click Change, pick your file, adjust the crop, click Done, then Publish.
- 07After publishing, check it next to one of your comments, where it shows at about 40 px, and on your channel page.
Common mistakes to check before you post
- Putting a logo that touches the corners of the square. The circle crop cuts them, because about 21.5% of a square falls outside its inscribed circle.
- Using small text. Lettering under about 60 px tall on the 800 px canvas is 3 px or less at the roughly 40 px size used in comments.
- Uploading a wide logo as is. It will be cropped to a square, so fit it into a square canvas first.
- Uploading an animated GIF, which is not accepted.
- Using a 98 × 98 file because that is the render size. It looks soft on high-density screens.
Which YouTube profile picture size should you use?
Use 800 × 800 (1:1). YouTube's help page states the formats (JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG, no animated GIFs), that the image should not exceed 15 MB, and that it renders at 98 × 98 px. It does not give an upload size, so 800 × 800 comes from guides such as Postfast. It is about eight times the width of the rendered size, which stays crisp on high-density screens.
Some third-party guides cite a 4 MB limit. That conflicts with YouTube's 15 MB, and we follow YouTube. In practice an 800 × 800 file is far below either number.
Worked example: designing for a 98 px render
YouTube says the picture renders at 98 × 98 px, so an 800 px canvas is scaled by 98 ÷ 800 = 0.1225. A letter 300 px tall becomes about 37 px, which is readable; a letter 100 px tall becomes about 12 px; a line 8 px thick becomes about 1 px.
Smaller surfaces are harsher. At the roughly 40 px that third-party guides report for comments, the scale is 40 ÷ 800 = 0.05: the 300 px letter is 15 px and the 100 px letter is 5 px. Use one bold shape, a face filling most of the frame, or one or two letters, and test the result at 40 px wide before you upload.
The circle crop
The largest square that fits inside the circle on an 800 × 800 upload is 800 ÷ √2, about 566 px, starting 117 px in from each edge. That is the dashed box in the resizer; the corners outside the circle, about 21.5% of the square, are not shown.
This assumes YouTube displays the avatar as a perfect circle, which is how it appears on the site. The help page does not say so explicitly.
Match the profile picture to the banner
YouTube shows your banner as a background at the top of your channel page, and your profile picture on your channel, your videos and your comments. Use one color from your YouTube banner in the picture, and see the YouTube thumbnail size guide to keep the three consistent.
What we could not confirm
- 800 × 800 is not stated on YouTube's help page. It comes from third-party guides.
- YouTube says the picture renders at 98 × 98 px but does not say on which page or surface.
- Some guides say the limit is 4 MB. We could not find that on YouTube's page and use 15 MB.
- YouTube's help page does not state that avatars display as circles. That is how they appear on the site, but it is not documented there.
- The roughly 20 to 50 px sizes in comments, search and feeds come from third-party guides, which disagree with each other, and vary by surface.
- YouTube publishes no maximum pixel size for the profile picture, only the 15 MB file limit.
- YouTube Studio's menu labels change from time to time. The Customization > Profile path in the steps matched YouTube's help page on 2026-10-05.
YouTube profile picture size FAQ
What size should a YouTube profile picture be?
800 × 800 pixels at 1:1 is the common recommendation. YouTube itself states only that the image renders at 98 × 98 px and that the file must not exceed 15 MB.
What file types does YouTube accept for a profile picture?
JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG. Animated GIFs are not accepted.
Is a YouTube profile picture a circle?
Yes, on the site it shows as a circle, so the corners of your square are hidden. On an 800 × 800 upload, keep faces and text inside the central 566 × 566 px.
What is the maximum file size for a YouTube profile picture?
15 MB according to YouTube's help page. Some third-party guides say 4 MB, which conflicts with YouTube's page.
Why is my YouTube profile picture blurry?
Usually the source was small and was enlarged, or it has fine detail that vanishes at 98 px. Upload at least 800 × 800 and simplify the design.
How big is a YouTube profile picture in comments?
YouTube does not say. Postfast measures about 40 × 40 px in comments and 48 to 52 px in search results, so check that your design still reads at 40 px wide.
