Facebook Feed
By the AdFlint research team · Last reviewed November 2026
Ads placed between posts in the main scrolling surface of Facebook, on the app and the website.
Meta's help center describes Facebook Feed as ads shown in the desktop Feed on the Facebook website and in the mobile Feed on the app or a mobile browser. It supports image, video, carousel, collection, and catalog ads, with 4:5 the recommended aspect ratio. Use it as the baseline you compare other placements against. The mistake is designing one square asset for everything.
Key takeaways
- Facebook Feed places ads between posts in the main stream on desktop and mobile, and from March 2026 the placement includes the Friends tab.
- It supports 1.91:1, 16:9, 1:1, and 4:5, with 4:5 recommended, and desktop video shows at 1:1.
- Meta says adding more placements does not raise ad cost, and recommends Advantage+ placements.
- Use the Placement breakdown to compare Feed against other placements on cost per result.
In practice.
Facebook Feed is the placement where your ad appears between posts in the main scrolling stream of Facebook. Meta's help center says ads appear in the desktop Feed when people use the Facebook website on a computer, and in the mobile Feed when they use the app or the website through a mobile browser. It is one of the Feeds group of placements, alongside Instagram Feed, Threads feed, Marketplace, right column, notifications, and Business Explore. Meta also notes that starting in March 2026, the Facebook Feed placement will include the Facebook Friends tab. You buy it through the Placements section of the ad set in Ads Manager, either via Advantage+ placements or manually.
This placement supports the widest range of formats of any on the platform: single image, video, carousel, collection, and catalog ads. For aspect ratios, Meta says Facebook Feed supports 1.91:1, 16:9, 1:1, and 4:5, with 4:5 recommended for both images and videos. On the computer version of Facebook Feed, video displays at 1:1, which can cause black bars on both sides of a 4:5 video. Carousel specs for Facebook add copy limits of 125 characters of text, 40 for the headline, and 25 for the link description. Also, Meta noted that starting in March 2026, single media and Advantage+ catalog collection ads on Facebook Feed will no longer display a URL in the ad footer.
Under Advantage+ placements, Facebook Feed is typically one of several places the system chooses between, and it is the baseline other placements get compared against. Meta says adding placements does not raise the cost of your ad, and recommends Advantage+ placements so the delivery system can make the most of your budget. If you pick manual placements, you decide whether Feed runs alone or with others. Feed also interacts with audience: audience mix differs by account, so check your own breakdown rather than assume. Objectives such as Sales, Leads, Traffic, and Awareness all support Feed. Because Feed is the default workhorse, a small gain in click-through rate here can matter more to the whole account than a large gain in a minor placement.
Common mistakes include designing one square asset for every placement and ignoring 4:5, which takes more screen space on mobile and is Meta's recommended shape. Another is cramming too much text into the image and neglecting the primary text above it, which is the first thing many people read. A third is ignoring the desktop experience, where video shows at 1:1. And a fourth is treating Feed as only a conversion channel. Many people see your ad there without clicking, so a clear brand, offer, and design matter for later retargeting. Revisit the placement breakdown whenever you change objective, because the same creative can behave very differently when the goal changes.
This week, check the Placement breakdown for your current campaigns and note Feed's cost per result, frequency, and share of spend. Create a 4:5 version of any creative still using squares. Look at the desktop preview as well as mobile in Advanced preview. Check that your primary text works alone: the first line should state the offer, because longer text may be cut off behind a see more link. Then test one change at a time, such as a new first line or a new image, comparing against your current Feed result. If Feed performs far better than other placements, consider building separate creative for the rest.
Bakery moves from square to 4:5
Say a bakery runs a single image ad for custom cakes at $20 per day. The original is a 1:1 photo. Over 10 days ($200), Facebook Feed delivers 14,000 impressions and 168 link clicks, a 1.2 percent click-through rate, and 6 cake inquiries at $33.33 each.
The bakery makes a 4:5 crop of the same photo, with the price in the first line of text, and runs it for the next 10 days at the same budget. Feed delivers 13,500 impressions, 189 link clicks (1.4 percent), and 8 inquiries at $25 each. The numbers are made up, and other factors changed too, so it is not a clean test. The bakery repeats it with a split test to confirm, but the direction fits Meta's guidance that 4:5 is the recommended shape on Facebook Feed.

Common questions.
What is the best image size for Facebook Feed ads?
Meta's help center says Facebook Feed supports 1.91:1, 16:9, 1:1, and 4:5, and that 4:5 is recommended. Carousel images on Facebook are recommended at 1024 by 1024 pixels for 1:1.
Do Facebook Feed ads show on desktop?
Yes. Meta says ads appear in the desktop Feed when people use Facebook on a computer, and in the mobile Feed on the app or mobile browser. Video appears at 1:1 on desktop.
Can I run only in Facebook Feed?
Yes, by choosing manual placements and selecting only Facebook Feed. Meta recommends Advantage+ placements for better use of budget, so compare both approaches in a test.
Is Facebook Feed more expensive than other placements?
It varies by audience and season. Use the Placement breakdown in Ads Manager to compare cost per result across placements in your own account.
