Messenger Placement
By the AdFlint research team · Last reviewed November 2026
Ads shown inside the Messenger app, as Stories ads or as sponsored messages.
Meta's current placement list names Messenger Stories, and its aspect ratio guide also covers Messenger sponsored messages, a message-based unit separate from Stories. An older inbox placement between conversations no longer appears in the placement list. The placement pairs naturally with click-to-message campaigns where a reply is the conversion, so slow replies make the leads go cold.
Key takeaways
- Messenger placements include Messenger Stories, and Meta's guides also refer to sponsored messages sent to people who already contacted your business.
- Click-to-message campaigns use Messenger as a conversion location, so the conversion is a conversation.
- Reply speed decides whether Messenger leads convert, so staff the inbox before you spend.
- Check Ads Manager for the Messenger options your objective currently allows.
In practice.
Messenger is Meta's chat app, and its placements are the spots inside it where your ads can run. Meta's current placement list names Messenger Stories, where your ads appear in people's Stories on Messenger and sit in the same Stories group as Facebook Stories and Instagram Stories. Meta's aspect ratio guide also refers to Messenger sponsored messages, a message-based ad unit that is separate from the Stories placement. The older inbox placement, where an ad appeared between conversations in the chats list, is not in the placement list on Meta's current help page. Placement names change over time, so treat the Placements list in Ads Manager as the final word.
Placement choices appear in the Placements section of the ad set. If you use Advantage+ placements, Meta decides whether Messenger inventory gets any of your budget. If you choose manual placements, you tick the Messenger options you want. Creative needs vary: Messenger Stories sits with the other Stories placements, and Messenger sponsored messages support 1.91:1, 16:9, and 1:1. Carousel ads on Facebook, Messenger, and Audience Network share a 2 to 10 card range with a recommended 1:1 ratio at 1080 by 1080 pixels. Text limits for those carousels are 125 characters of text, 40 for the headline, and 25 for the link description.
Messenger is different from the rest of the placement list because it connects to a conversation. Click-to-message ads, available under objectives such as Engagement, Leads, Sales, and Traffic with Messenger as the conversion location, start a chat when someone taps. Meta's objective guide maps the old Messages objective to those newer options, for example Engagement with messaging apps as the conversion location, or Leads with Messenger. This pairs naturally with a business that closes through chat, such as a salon, a car detailer, or a local contractor. The ad's job is to get a reply, and the conversion is the conversation. Because the reply happens in a private thread, you will not see social proof or comments, only the conversation itself.
The big mistake is buying Messenger traffic without anyone to answer. A lead who messages at 9 pm and gets a reply at noon the next day has often moved on. Set up Business Suite Inbox with saved replies or automations for common questions, and assign someone to monitor it. Another mistake is treating Messenger as a general reach channel; the placement is small compared with feeds and Stories, so budgets can be spread thin. A third is not tracking what happens after the chat starts. If the sale happens by phone or in person, results inside Ads Manager will understate the true outcome. Write a plain greeting that tells people what to expect, such as hours and typical reply time.
This week, check what your account actually offers. Create a test ad set, open the Placements section with manual selection, and read the Messenger options your objective allows. If you run click-to-message ads, time your response: send a message to your own Page from a personal account and see how fast the reply comes. Add automated greetings and quick replies in Inbox. In reporting, compare cost per message started with the number of those chats that became customers. If one in ten chats turns into a sale, multiply your cost per chat by ten to see your real cost per customer. Review a handful of real chats each week to learn which questions come up and fix them in the ad copy.
Car detailer measures cost per customer
Suppose a car detailer runs a click-to-message campaign at $15 per day for 14 days ($210) with Messenger as the conversion location. Ads Manager reports 70 conversations started, or $3.00 each. The owner answers within 10 minutes during the day but leaves evening messages until morning.
Of the 70 chats, 21 ask for a price, 10 book a detail, and 6 of the bookings are from chats answered in under an hour. At 10 bookings the cost per booking is $21. The numbers are made up. The owner turns on an instant reply that asks for the car model and preferred day, and the next 14 days at the same $210 produce 66 chats and 15 bookings, or $14 per booking. The ad did not change. The response did.

Common questions.
What Messenger ad placements are there?
Meta's current placement list shows Messenger Stories. Its aspect ratio guide also mentions Messenger sponsored messages. Click-to-message ads from other placements can also open a Messenger chat. Check Ads Manager for the options your objective offers.
Do I need Messenger placement to run click-to-message ads?
Not necessarily. Click-to-message ads can run in feeds and Stories and open a chat when tapped. Messenger as a conversion location is a setting, separate from the Messenger placement.
What size are Messenger carousel ads?
Meta lists 2 to 10 cards, a recommended 1:1 ratio, and 1080 by 1080 pixels for carousels on Messenger and Audience Network. Text is limited to 125 characters, headline to 40, and link description to 25.
How do I handle replies from Messenger ads?
Use the Inbox in Meta Business Suite, which combines messages from your Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp Business. You can set up automations for common questions.
