Advantage+ Audience vs Lookalike Audiences: Live Expansion vs a Modeled List
In short: Both try to find more people who resemble your best customers, but they get there differently. A Lookalike Audience is a discrete, precomputed list built once from a seed and a percentage size, then used like any other audience input. Advantage+ Audience does the resemblance-finding continuously and in real time, using whatever signal the campaign has - including a Lookalike, if you feed it one - as a mere starting suggestion. Lookalikes give you a controllable dial on how tightly the match resembles the seed; Advantage+ Audience gives up that dial in exchange for constantly updated matching. Chooser: pick a Lookalike when you want a fixed, inspectable audience size and resemblance level; let Advantage+ Audience run loose when you trust live conversion signal more than a periodically rebuilt model.

Advantage+ Audience
Meta's automated audience selection, where anything you enter acts as a suggestion rather than a boundary and delivery is free to expand beyond it.
You supply an audience suggestion - interests, custom audiences, demographics - and Meta prioritizes it briefly before searching the full eligible pool. It is now the default in most objectives and has largely superseded manual detailed targeting. The mistake is reading an unchanged reach estimate as proof nothing changed: exclusions and age or location limits still bind, but your interest selections effectively do not.
Full definitionLookalike Audiences
Meta audiences modelled on a seed list, matching users who resemble your source on the signals Meta holds, sized as a percentage of a chosen country.
You pick a source - purchasers, high-value customers, engaged visitors - and a percentage; smaller percentages mean closer resemblance and less reach, larger ones the reverse. A value-based source lets Meta weight by revenue. Their edge has narrowed as broad targeting and Advantage+ audience improved. The persistent error is seeding from a large low-quality list, which models the wrong person very precisely.

The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Advantage+ Audience | Lookalike Audiences | |
|---|---|---|
| How the resembling audience gets built | Continuously, during delivery, by comparing live conversion signal against the whole eligible pool. | Once, from a seed list and a percentage setting, then held as a population Meta updates on its own schedule. |
| What you control | Only the seed you suggest and any exclusions - not how far the match can range. | The seed source, the percentage size, and whether it is value-weighted. |
| Minimum data needed | Works with little or no seed, since it draws on the whole platform's inferred signal. | Needs a seed audience of a workable size before Meta can model resemblance at all. |
| How resemblance is tuned | Not tunable directly - it is a byproduct of how much conversion data the account has. | Directly tunable - smaller percentage means closer resemblance and less reach, larger means the reverse. |
| Time to become usable | Immediate, though quality improves as conversion data accumulates. | Takes time to build the initial model and needs periodic refresh as the seed list changes. |
| What a value-based seed does | Nothing specific - Advantage+ Audience already weights toward predicted value on its own. | Lets Meta bias the match toward people who resemble your highest-value customers, not just any converter. |
| Failure mode | Expanding on a thin or noisy conversion signal, which produces broad, low-quality delivery that looks fine on paper. | Seeding from a large, low-quality list, which models the wrong person with unhelpful precision. |
What actually separates them.
A Lookalike Audience is a fixed list you can name, size, and hand to any ad set; Advantage+ Audience is a live process with no equivalent list you can point to.
Lookalike size and closeness are set explicitly by percentage; Advantage+ Audience has no comparable dial, so you cannot ask it for 'more like this, tighter' the way you can with a Lookalike.
A Lookalike needs a seed of reasonable size to model at all, while Advantage+ Audience can run and improve gradually even from a thin starting signal.
Feeding a Lookalike into Advantage+ Audience as a suggestion does not make delivery stay inside that Lookalike - it becomes one more input the system can expand past.
Lookalike quality is bounded by how good the seed list was on the day it was built; Advantage+ Audience keeps re-reading fresh conversion data as the campaign runs, so its quality can shift week to week without you touching anything.
Which one should you use?
Use Advantage+ Audience when
- You want continuously updated targeting without maintaining and refreshing a seed list yourself.
- Your conversion volume is healthy enough that live expansion consistently finds better performers than a static model would.
- You do not need a fixed, inspectable audience size to report on - performance is judged by results, not by who is technically 'in' the audience.
- You are consolidating audience strategy into fewer, simpler ad sets rather than maintaining several Lookalike tiers.
Use Lookalike Audiences when
- You want a specific, controllable resemblance level - tight for precision, loose for volume - and need to see that as a settable number.
- You have a strong, sufficiently sized seed list of purchasers or high-value customers and want to model directly off it.
- You need an audience you can reuse identically across multiple ad sets or campaigns as a stable reference point.
- You want to weight the match toward customer value rather than just conversion likelihood, using a value-based seed.
Common questions.
Does Advantage+ Audience replace Lookalike Audiences?
Not entirely. It has taken over a lot of the resemblance-finding work Lookalikes used to do alone, which is why Lookalike usage has declined, but a well-built value-based Lookalike can still outperform pure expansion when you have a strong seed list and want a specific, controllable size.
Can I use a Lookalike Audience as the seed under Advantage+ Audience?
Yes, you can add a Lookalike as a targeting suggestion the same way you would an interest or Custom Audience. It biases early delivery but does not guarantee the campaign stays inside that Lookalike once expansion kicks in.
Why did my Lookalike Audience stop growing?
Lookalikes update on Meta's own schedule as the underlying seed changes, so if your seed list has gone stale - an upload nobody refreshed, or a pixel audience that shrank - the Lookalike built from it will stagnate too. Refresh the seed first before assuming the Lookalike itself is broken.
What percentage size should I pick for a Lookalike?
There is no universal answer - smaller percentages trade reach for closer resemblance to the seed, larger percentages do the opposite. Start tighter if your seed is a genuinely high-value group and widen it only if delivery volume becomes the constraint.
Or stop choosing between them.
AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
