Advantage+ Audience vs Broad Targeting
In short: Both describe how a Meta ad set decides who sees an ad under the current delivery system, but they sit at different altitudes. Advantage+ Audience is the mechanism itself - the standing behavior that treats any interest, demographic, or custom-audience input you add as a soft suggestion rather than a hard boundary, and it now governs essentially every ad set. Broad targeting is a specific way of using that mechanism: adding no interest or custom-audience suggestion at all, so the only inputs are age, gender, and location. In practice every broad ad set runs on Advantage+ Audience, but not every Advantage+ Audience ad set is broad. Choose based on whether you have a suggestion worth feeding the system, not on whether you trust the system.

Advantage+ Audience
Meta's automated audience selection, where anything you enter acts as a suggestion rather than a boundary and delivery is free to expand beyond it.
You supply an audience suggestion - interests, custom audiences, demographics - and Meta prioritizes it briefly before searching the full eligible pool. It is now the default in most objectives and has largely superseded manual detailed targeting. The mistake is reading an unchanged reach estimate as proof nothing changed: exclusions and age or location limits still bind, but your interest selections effectively do not.
Full definitionBroad Targeting
Runs a Meta ad set with little definition beyond location, age, and gender, leaving the delivery system to find buyers from conversion signal alone.
You leave interests and behaviors empty and let Meta's optimization use pixel and Conversions API events to locate people likely to trigger your chosen event. It has become the default posture on Meta because the system finds pockets no manual interest stack would ever describe. It needs enough conversion volume to learn, and advertisers frequently kill it mid-learning before delivery has stabilized.

The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Advantage+ Audience | Broad Targeting | |
|---|---|---|
| What it actually is | The delivery mechanism itself - a system-level behavior that turns any targeting input you add into a soft suggestion rather than a rule. | A specific way of using that mechanism: leaving the suggestion fields empty and keeping only age, gender, and location. |
| What you enter | Interests, custom audiences, or demographics as a starting hint for the algorithm. | Nothing beyond the required minimums - the suggestion box stays empty. |
| What still binds as a hard rule | Exclusions, minimum age, and any location or special-ad-category restriction - these are not treated as suggestions. | The same hard rules apply, since broad targeting runs inside the same mechanism. |
| Reach estimate behavior | Looks similar to a narrower ad set because Meta briefly prioritizes your suggestion before expanding past it. | Reflects the full eligible population from the start, since there is no suggestion to prioritize. |
| What steers delivery | Your suggestion plus the optimization event, weighted toward the suggestion early and away from it as data accumulates. | The optimization event alone - pixel and Conversions API signal is doing all the work. |
| When the two are functionally identical | When you leave every suggestion field empty, Advantage+ Audience behaves exactly like broad targeting. | Broad targeting is really Advantage+ Audience with an empty suggestion - there is no separate broad targeting toggle to find. |
| Where people get confused | Assuming a filled-in suggestion still fences the audience the way old detailed targeting did. | Assuming broad targeting is a different system from Advantage+ Audience rather than a mode of it. |
What actually separates them.
Advantage+ Audience is the standing mechanism that reads every input as a hint; broad targeting is the choice to give that mechanism no hint beyond age, gender, and location.
A filled Advantage+ Audience suggestion gets brief delivery priority before the system expands past it, while broad targeting has no starting point to prioritize at all.
Exclusions and special-ad-category limits bind identically in both cases, because broad targeting is not a separate, looser system - it is the same one with an empty box.
Reach estimates read differently: a suggestion-fed ad set can show a deceptively narrow number that does not reflect true delivery, while a broad ad set's estimate is closer to reality from the start.
Feeding a real suggestion gives you a debuggable signal to point to when delivery goes sideways; broad targeting gives you nothing to inspect except the optimization event itself.
Which one should you use?
Use Advantage+ Audience when
- You have a genuine audience hypothesis - a customer list, a lookalike source, or a set of interests - worth feeding as a starting point.
- You want the early-delivery priority a suggestion provides without losing the ability to expand into the full eligible pool.
- You are migrating an old detailed-targeting ad set and want to keep its logic as a soft signal rather than deleting it outright.
- You need to combine an inclusion hint with a hard exclusion, such as excluding existing customers while suggesting a lookalike as the seed.
Use Broad Targeting when
- You have no audience hypothesis worth entering, or every hypothesis you tried performed the same as no hypothesis at all.
- Your account has enough weekly conversion volume for the optimization event to find a pattern without a head start.
- You are prospecting for a new product with no pixel history, no customer list, and no obvious interest analog.
- You want the cleanest possible read on what the algorithm finds on its own, unclouded by a suggestion nudging early delivery.
Common questions.
Is broad targeting just Advantage+ Audience with nothing filled in?
Yes. There is no separate broad targeting switch in Ads Manager - broad targeting is simply an Advantage+ Audience ad set where you left the interest, custom audience, and lookalike suggestion fields empty. Everything else about how the mechanism works, including which limits still bind as hard rules, is identical.
If suggestions are only soft hints, why bother entering one instead of going broad?
A suggestion gets real delivery priority in the early phase of an ad set, which can shorten the time it takes to find a workable audience when you have a genuine hypothesis. Once enough data accumulates the system leans on it less, so the benefit is front-loaded rather than a permanent fence around who sees the ad.
Why does my reach estimate look narrow if targeting is basically suggestions now?
The estimate reflects the brief prioritization window, not steady-state delivery, so a tightly defined suggestion can show a small number even though the ad set is free to expand well past it once it starts spending. Treat the estimate as a rough starting signal, not a cap.
Can I turn off Advantage+ Audience and go back to old-style hard targeting?
For campaigns optimizing toward conversions, leads, or app events, no - the suggestion-based mechanism is the default with no toggle back to a fenced setup. A few objectives, such as awareness and some traffic campaigns, still expose an option to revert to an original, non-suggestion audience, but that is the exception rather than the rule. What you still control, either way, is how much you put into the suggestion, exclusions, and the hard limits like minimum age, location, and special-ad-category restrictions.
Or stop choosing between them.
AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
