Responsive Search Ads vs Uploaded Image Ads: Search Text or Fixed Display Banner
In short: Both are ad formats you build inside Google Ads, but they don't compete for the same inventory or even the same kind of attention. RSA is text-only and lives on the Search results page, assembled per query from headlines and descriptions you supply. Uploaded Image Ads are fixed-size banners you design pixel by pixel and upload as a finished image or HTML5 file, running only on Display placements matching their exact dimensions. One is dynamically assembled text, the other is static hand-built visual creative, so the real decision is which network you're advertising on. On Search it's RSA by default; on Display, add Uploaded Image Ads alongside Responsive Display Ads when exact brand control matters.

Responsive Search Ads
Google's current search ad type, built from up to fifteen headlines and four descriptions that the system mixes into combinations per auction.
You supply assets, and Google assembles headline and description combinations tailored to each query, with the option to pin specific assets to fixed positions. It is now the only search ad you can create. Feed it genuinely distinct assets rather than fifteen rewordings of one line. The frequent mistake is pinning everything, which collapses the combination space and defeats the testing the format exists to do.
Full definitionUploaded Image Ads
Fixed-size display banners you design yourself and upload as image or HTML5 files, rendering exactly as built with no automatic reassembly.
Because dimensions are fixed, these only serve where a matching slot exists, so reach is narrower than responsive display ads unless you upload the full size set. Reach for them when brand control over layout and typography is non-negotiable. The common mistake is running them alone: without responsive ads in the same ad group, large parts of the network have nothing eligible to show.

The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Responsive Search Ads | Uploaded Image Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Format type | Text assembled from headlines and descriptions per auction. | A single finished image or HTML5 file you built yourself. |
| Network | Search results and search partners. | Display Network only, in whatever size slots you uploaded for. |
| Design control | None over layout - you write words, Google arranges them. | Total - every pixel, font, and color is exactly what you uploaded. |
| Reach mechanics | Eligible for essentially any Search auction matching your keywords. | Only eligible for placements offering the exact dimensions you uploaded. |
| Effort to update | Edit text assets directly in Google Ads, live almost immediately. | Redesign and re-upload a new file for every size affected, then wait for review. |
| Best paired with | Nothing else needed - it is the whole ad. | Responsive Display Ads in the same ad group, so unmatched sizes still have something eligible to serve. |
| Failure mode | Near-duplicate headlines that give the algorithm nothing real to test. | Uploading only one or two sizes and assuming Display reach behaves like Search reach. |
What actually separates them.
RSA has no visual dimension at all; Uploaded Image Ads have no text-assembly step at all, since they run in entirely different auction types - query-matched text versus placement-matched banner.
RSA reach follows keyword and query matching; Uploaded Image Ad reach follows pixel-dimension matching against whatever ad slots a publisher offers.
Editing an RSA asset goes live for future auctions almost immediately; editing an Uploaded Image Ad means uploading a brand new file, since there's no text or color to tweak on an existing one.
RSA reporting is asset-level, per headline and description; Uploaded Image Ads report as one whole creative since there's nothing to break apart.
Running Uploaded Image Ads alone in an ad group, with no responsive format present, leaves large parts of the Display Network with nothing eligible to show, since fixed sizes won't match every slot; RSA has no equivalent gap because Search has one inventory shape.
Which one should you use?
Use Responsive Search Ads when
- You're advertising on Search and need an ad that matches what people are actively typing.
- You have strong copy ideas but no design resources or images ready.
- You want ongoing algorithmic testing of message variations without manually building each one.
- You're troubleshooting why Display-style creative isn't showing on Search - it can't, since RSA is the only Search text format available.
Use Uploaded Image Ads when
- Brand guidelines require exact typography, color, and layout with zero algorithmic reinterpretation.
- You've had creative professionally designed and don't want it recombined or resized automatically.
- You're running a Display campaign where a small set of standard sizes covers your target placements.
- You're supplementing Responsive Display Ads with a few pixel-perfect versions for your highest-value placements, not replacing them.

Can I run Uploaded Image Ads on the Search Network?
No. Image-based formats, including Uploaded Image Ads, run on the Display Network and matching placements, not the Search results page. If you want your ad to appear next to search results, you need a Responsive Search Ad.
Why does my Uploaded Image Ad get so little reach compared to my Responsive Display Ads?
It's almost always a size problem - Uploaded Image Ads only serve on placements offering the exact dimensions you uploaded, while Responsive Display Ads resize and reformat to fit nearly any slot. Uploading the full recommended size set closes most of the gap, but RDA will still typically reach more inventory since it can adapt on the fly.
Do I need Responsive Search Ads and Uploaded Image Ads in the same campaign?
Not in the same campaign - they run on different networks, Search versus Display, so pairing them there does nothing. Within a Display campaign, pairing Uploaded Image Ads with Responsive Display Ads in the same ad group is worth doing, since the responsive format fills in placements your fixed sizes can't reach.
Or stop choosing between them.
