Attribution & Conversion Counting

1-Day Click Attribution vs View-Through Conversions: Click or Exposure

In short: 1-day click is a specific, fixed 24-hour click window; view-through conversions is the broader category for crediting people who saw the ad, never clicked, and converted anyway. The two credit different, non-overlapping groups of people, since a click on record always outranks a view. Automated bidding leans on click-based signals like 1-day click far more heavily than it leans on view-through numbers, which are usually reported for visibility rather than driving delivery. If you want the strongest, action-based evidence, read 1-day click; if you want to see what exposure alone might be doing, read view-through, and validate it with a lift test before you trust it.

1-Day Click Attribution

Counts a conversion only if it happens within 24 hours of the user clicking the ad, measured from the click itself.

The window opens at the click and closes 24 hours later; anything after that is invisible to the campaign. Advertisers pick it for impulse purchases, app installs, or when they want reported numbers to stay close to same-session behavior. On Meta it is the tightest setting available. The mistake is comparing a 1-day-click campaign against a 7-day-click one and concluding the creative performed worse, when only the counting rule changed.

View-Through Conversions

Counts people who were served your ad, never clicked it, and converted later within the view attribution window.

Both Google and Meta report these separately from click conversions, and both apply a shorter default window to views than to clicks. They matter most for display, video, and upper-funnel social, where the ad is seen far more often than it is clicked. The persistent error is adding view-through conversions straight into blended ROAS; without a holdout or lift test you have no evidence the impression caused anything.

What actually separates them.

01

1-day click requires a logged click before its clock even starts; view-through conversions require the opposite - no click, just an ad rendered on screen - so the two credit non-overlapping sets of people.

02

1-day click's timeframe is fixed at 24 hours by definition, while view-through conversions is a category whose window length is a separate, configurable setting on the platform.

03

Automated bidding weights click-based signals like 1-day click far more heavily than view-through data, so switching between them changes what the algorithm is chasing, not just what gets reported.

04

Because view-through credits people with zero interaction on record, it needs a holdout or lift test to be trusted as causal, while 1-day click's actual click at least documents an active step the person took.

05

Reporting keeps these as separate line items rather than one blended number, so a campaign can look weak on 1-day clicks while quietly building a large view-through tail, and neither number alone tells the full story.

Which one should you use?

Use 1-Day Click Attribution when

  • You are selling something where the click itself signals real intent.
  • You want the harder, less inflatable evidence for a budget decision.
  • Your product has same-day, single-session buying behavior.
  • You are feeding conversion data into a bid strategy and want the signal it actually weighs most.
  • You need a number that closely matches what your landing page's own click-tracking shows.

Use View-Through Conversions when

  • You are running display, video, or Stories where impressions vastly outnumber clicks.
  • You want to measure the exposure effect on people who scrolled past without tapping.
  • You are running a brand campaign where passive awareness, not a click, is the intended outcome.
  • You have, or plan to run, a holdout or lift test to validate whether the number is incremental.
  • You are reporting full-funnel impact to stakeholders alongside click numbers, not instead of them.

Common questions.

Do view-through conversions include people who also clicked the ad?

No. Click always takes precedence over view in reporting, so once a click is on record for someone, that conversion is counted as click-through, not view-through. View-through only picks up the people left over who never clicked at all.

Should I add 1-day click and view-through conversions together for total ROAS?

You can look at them side by side for a rough full-funnel picture, but treat the sum cautiously. View-through has no causal proof behind it on its own, so blending it straight into one revenue number can overstate what the campaign actually delivered.

Why is my view-through conversions count so much smaller than my impressions?

Most impressions never lead to a conversion at all, and among the ones that do, anyone who also clicked gets credited to the click instead. What remains for view-through is only the small slice of people who converted with no click on record.

Or stop choosing between them.
