Smart Bidding vs Manual CPC: When Automation Actually Wins
In short: Manual CPC fixes one bid per keyword or ad group that stays put until you change it. Smart Bidding computes a bid for every individual auction using device, location, time, query, and audience signals you cannot set by hand. The real question is not control versus automation - it is whether your conversion data is good enough to train a model.

Manual CPC
You set the maximum you will pay per click at keyword or ad group level, with no automated adjustment at auction time.
Bids stay where you put them until you change them, which makes spend and position predictable but blind to auction-time signals like device, time of day, and audience. It suits tiny budgets, brand terms, and diagnostic periods when you want to isolate one variable. The mistake is staying manual on a converting account long enough that competitors bidding at auction time take the cheap inventory you cannot see.
Full definitionSmart Bidding
Google's umbrella term for auction-time automated strategies that use conversion signals to set each bid instead of a fixed manual amount.
It covers Maximize Conversions and Maximize Conversion Value along with their target CPA and target ROAS variants. Every bid is computed per auction using device, location, time, query, and audience signals you cannot set by hand. Adopt it once conversion tracking is trustworthy and volume is steady. The mistake is treating it as a fix for a weak offer, since it optimizes toward whatever you defined as success.

The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Manual CPC | Smart Bidding | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the bid | You, at keyword or ad group level. | Google, per auction, from live signals. |
| Signals used | Only what you encode: schedules, adjustments, segments. | Device, location, time, query, audience and more, weighed per auction. |
| Conversion tracking required | No - it can run blind. | Yes, and it must be accurate or it optimizes toward the wrong action. |
| Speed of response | Only as fast as you log in and edit. | Immediate, on every auction. |
| Test legibility | Clean cause and effect - you changed one number. | Blurred, because the model re-learns after every edit. |
| Best fit | Tiny budgets, brand terms, controlled diagnostics. | Steady conversion volume with tracking you trust. |
What actually separates them.
Manual CPC cannot react within an auction, while Smart Bidding prices each auction separately using signals never exposed in the interface.
Smart Bidding requires working conversion tracking and will faithfully optimize toward a badly defined conversion action.
Manual bids make experiments readable, since only the number you touched moved; Smart Bidding re-enters learning after edits.
Broad match on Manual CPC is the combination that most reliably buys irrelevant traffic, because you cannot bid down per query.
Enhanced CPC, the old halfway option, has been wound down, so there is no longer a supported middle setting between the two.
Which one should you use?
Use Manual CPC when
- The campaign produces too few conversions for a model to learn a pattern from.
- You are running a diagnostic period and need one variable isolated.
- Brand terms where you already know what a click is worth and want spend predictable.
- Conversion tracking is broken or mid-migration and you refuse to train on bad data.
Use Smart Bidding when
- Conversion tracking is verified end to end and conversions arrive steadily.
- Traffic spans devices, geographies, and hours where the right bid genuinely differs.
- You run broad or phrase match and need auction-level judgment on query quality.
- Managing bids by hand has become the bottleneck rather than the lever.
Common questions.
Is Manual CPC deprecated?
No. Manual CPC is still supported on Search and Display. What went away is Enhanced CPC, the auction-time adjustment layer that sat on top of manual bids; those campaigns were moved to plain Manual CPC. If you want auction-time adjustment now, the path is Maximize Conversions, not a manual bid with a multiplier.
Do I lose all control with Smart Bidding?
You trade bid-level control for target-level and structural control. You still set budget, target CPA or ROAS, match types, negatives, audiences, and geography, all of which shape which auctions the bidder can enter. What you cannot do is override the price of an individual auction.
How long before I can judge a switch to Smart Bidding?
Wait out the learning period, then add at least one full conversion window on top, because conversions credited to earlier clicks keep arriving after the change. Judging in the first days measures a model mid-training, which is when performance is worst by construction rather than by fault.
Or stop choosing between them.
AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
