Meta Commerce Manager
By the AdFlint research team · Last reviewed October 2026 · 13 min read
Meta Commerce Manager is Meta's tool for managing your product catalog and sales on Facebook and Instagram. The catalog you build there feeds catalog ads (now called ads with product media), product tags and shops. You don't need a shop to use it.
You open it at facebook.com/commerce_manager, create a catalog, add products by hand, by data feed, from a store platform such as Shopify or from your pixel, then connect your Meta Pixel so product views and purchases match catalog items. The key current fact: as of September 2025, Meta says Shops use website checkout, and payment processing, payouts, order management, returns and disputes were discontinued in Commerce Manager.
Key takeaways
- Since September 2025, Shops use website checkout; payouts, order management, returns, disputes and the Inbox were discontinued in Commerce Manager.
- You don't need a shop to build a catalog and use it in ads.
- For catalog ads, each product id must exactly match the content ID your pixel sends in content_ids.
- Meta recommends a match rate of 90% or higher on two pages and "above 75%" on another. Aim for 90%.
- Advantage+ catalog ads are now called ads with product media, and each new Sales campaign can use only one catalog.
What Meta Commerce Manager does
Meta describes Commerce Manager as "a platform to manage your catalog and sales on Facebook and Instagram" (About Commerce Manager). At its center is the catalog: a list of the products or services you want to promote across Meta's apps. Meta says plainly that you don't need a shop to use Commerce Manager. If you sell physical products, you can add a shop on Facebook, Instagram or both, which creates a commerce account and adds more tools.
Inside, Overview flags issues to fix, Catalog holds your products, product sets, data sources and event connections such as your pixel, and Insights appears only if you have a shop.
Is checkout on Facebook and Instagram still available?
Not for Shops, according to Meta. Meta's article on the change says: "As of September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram now use website checkout" (About changes to Shops and checkout). Your shop keeps its home page, collections and product pages, but customers are sent to your own website to complete the purchase.
Meta's Graph API v26.0 changelog, released July 29, 2026, is blunter: "Checkout directly on Facebook and Instagram for Shops has been sunset." It also deprecates the Commerce Order Management API, 47 endpoints, with no replacement, and removes those endpoints from all remaining API versions on October 27, 2026. Meta says calls on v26.0 and later have been blocked since July 29, 2026.
For reporting, Meta suggests Website purchases, Shop-assisted purchases or Direct website purchases instead of Meta purchases, plus an outside tool such as Google Analytics. If your site's tracking is thin, start with a small-business conversion tracking setup.
Some of Meta's own pages have not caught up. Its commerce eligibility page still says "Checkout on Facebook and Instagram is currently only supported in the United States," and its payouts page says checkout is "available in the US and to a limited number of other businesses." The change article and the dated changelog say otherwise, so this page goes with them.
One wrinkle comes from Shopify, not Meta. Shopify describes a "Shopify-powered direct checkout on Meta surfaces, including Muse when available," shown only to customers in the United States, Canada or Mexico, with no selling fee beyond standard payment processing (Selling on Meta). Meta's own spec calls direct checkout "not available to everyone yet," and on September 8, 2026 Meta said its Muse AI agent "can checkout with Link built by Stripe." Shopify also says Meta stopped acting as marketplace tax facilitator for new orders created as of August 26, 2025.

|---|---|
| Checkout on Facebook and Instagram | Sunset for Shops; buyers pay on your website |
| Payment processing and payouts | Discontinued |
| Order management for new orders | Discontinued; manage orders on your own website |
| Returns | No longer managed in Commerce Manager |
| Chargebacks and disputes | "Meta no longer offers chargeback or dispute resolution services" |
| Inbox for customer messages | Removed |
| Commerce Order Management API | Deprecated; removed from all versions October 27, 2026 |
| "Website and shop" conversion location | Discontinued; choose Website and turn Shops on under Personalized destinations |
| Meta purchases metrics | No longer applicable; history kept up to 39 months |
| Shop home page, collections and product pages; Shops ads; catalogs | Still available |
How to open Commerce Manager (and what to do if it looks empty)
Meta's help pages give the address as facebook.com/commerce_manager, which lists the commerce accounts and catalogs you can access.
- 1.Log in with the Facebook profile that has access to your business portfolio, Meta's container for your Page, Instagram account, ad account and the people who can use them.
- 2.Go to facebook.com/commerce_manager.
- 3.Catalog missing? Use the dropdown in the top left to switch business portfolio. Meta says a missing catalog may mean you need a different portfolio.
- 4.To create a catalog, you need full control of that portfolio.
- 5.No portfolio yet: create one at business.facebook.com from the dropdown under Home. One person can create up to 2 business portfolios.
Commerce Manager vs Business Suite, Ads Manager and Events Manager
Meta spreads this work across several tools. The table below shows what each one is for, in Meta's words.
One number trips people up: Events Manager shows every event Meta receives, while Commerce Manager shows only events it can match to products in the catalog you're viewing. A higher Events Manager total is expected and is not, by itself, an error.
| Tool | What Meta says it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce Manager | "a platform to manage your catalog and sales on Facebook and Instagram" | Catalogs, product sets, pixel connections, shops, product errors |
| Meta Business Suite | Free; posts, insights, inbox and quick ads | Day-to-day Page and Instagram work |
| Ads Manager | "more detailed, customizable ad campaigns with advanced audience targeting" | Building campaigns, including ads with product media |
| Events Manager | "set up, monitor, and troubleshoot integrations like the Conversions API, Meta Pixel" | Checking that your pixel and Conversions API send events |
Which catalog type to pick, and whether you need more than one
Beyond products, Meta offers catalog types for travel (hotels and rentals, flights, destinations), automotive, real estate, professional services, and apps and software. Each type has different required data, and you can't switch type later.
Meta recommends one catalog where possible (Tips for using one catalog). A shop connects to only one catalog, which you can't switch later, and a Shops catalog must hold physical goods, from 1 item up to 10 million. If you merge catalogs, keep each product's content ID: Meta warns that changing IDs can reset that product's event history.
Access comes in two levels. Partial access lets someone view products, manage product sets, see the match rate and pick the catalog in ads; full control adds managing products, data sources and settings. If an agency runs your ads, Meta recommends keeping the catalog in your own portfolio and assigning the agency as a partner. Partner links work once and expire in 30 days.
How to add products to your catalog
Pick the method by how many products you have and where they already live. The table below sums up Meta's rules for each.
A Google Sheets feed needs the data in the first tab and sharing set to Anyone with the link. On file size, Meta's pages disagree: its scheduled feed article gives 4 GB, while its feed errors article says "For a one-time upload, the size limit is 100 MB." If a large one-time upload fails, switch to a scheduled feed or split the file.
| Method | Best for | Meta's rules |
|---|---|---|
| Manual entry | Under 50 products | At least 1 image: 500 x 500 pixels minimum, 8 MB maximum, JPEG or PNG |
| Data feed | Larger or changing catalogs | XLSX, CSV, TSV, XML or Google Sheets; once, hourly, daily or weekly; scheduled files up to 4 GB, split above 1 million products |
| Partner platform | Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Magento, Ecwid, GoDaddy (US only) and others | Edit on the platform; manual edits in Commerce Manager are overwritten at the next sync |
| Meta Pixel | Products on your own website | Products only, not travel or automotive; needs microdata tags and PageView on each product page; updates typically within 15 minutes |
| Catalog batch API | Developers updating more than hourly | Otherwise Meta points to the Feed API |
Required product fields and Meta's limits
Meta's product data specification requires nine fields per product: id, title, description, availability, condition, price, link, image_link and brand. Some Shops categories, such as clothing and shoes, also need size.
Shop images display square at a recommended 1024 x 1024 pixels; a 1:1 aspect ratio calculator helps you crop.
| Field | Meta's rule | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| id | Unique, case sensitive, up to 100 characters | Must exactly match your pixel's content ID |
| title | Up to 200 characters | Keep under 65 or it gets cut off |
| description | Plain text, 30 to 9,999 characters | Not all caps, not the same as the title |
| availability | in stock or out of stock | Out-of-stock items leave ads; shops show them as sold out for up to 56 days |
| condition | new, refurbished or used | Missing means a required attribute error |
| price | Number, space, 3-letter ISO 4217 code, such as 25.00 USD; 1 currency per file | Shops accept 0.50 to 10,000 |
| link | Your product page | For Shops, on a domain your business owns |
| image_link | JPEG or PNG, 500 x 500 or larger, under 8 MB | New image means a new URL, or Meta won't re-fetch it |
| brand | Up to 100 characters | No brand, GTIN or MPN triggers "Universal identifier missing" |
How to connect your Meta Pixel and fix a low catalog match rate
Connecting your Meta Pixel to your catalog lets Meta match product views and purchases on your site to catalog products, which is how catalog ads pick products for each person.
Match rate is the percentage of content IDs Meta receives from your site or app that match catalog products (Troubleshoot catalog match rate). Two Meta articles recommend 90% or higher (the one-catalog article adds "so that most products are available for ads targeting"); its catalog quality tips say "above 75%." Aim for 90%; below 75% misses both of Meta's targets.
Because IDs must match exactly and are case sensitive, any difference costs you: a parent ID sent where the catalog lists variants, or TEE-014 in one place and tee-014 in the other. Match rate may also pause if the catalog isn't used for ads for 28 days.
- 1.Confirm you have full control of both the catalog and the pixel, in or shared with the same business portfolio.
- 2.In Commerce Manager, open the Catalog tab, go to Events and choose Manage connections.
- 3.Connect the pixel or a dataset; a dataset ID can be used like a pixel ID.
- 4.Check the pixel sends content_ids, with an s, even for one ID. Meta requires contents or content_ids on ViewContent, Search and Purchase, and contents on AddToCart.
- 5.Read the match rate. It covers the last 28 days with a 48-hour delay.
How catalog ads work now: ads with product media
Meta renamed its catalog ads: "Ads with product media (previously called Advantage+ catalog ads)" show people relevant products from your catalog based on their interests, intent and actions (About ads showing product media). Meta gives no date for the rename, and some of its pages still use the old name.
Setup changed too. New Sales campaigns no longer show an Advantage+ catalog ads switch (Changes to sales campaign setup). With a catalog, Product data is on by default, and you choose Product media as the creative source. The catalog is set at campaign level, the product set at ad level and the dataset per ad set, so each campaign uses one catalog. Every catalog starts with a product set called All products.
A note on AdFlint, since this is our site: it is an AI ad manager that connects to your own Google Ads and Meta ad accounts. Catalogs and shops are set up in Commerce Manager itself, so use Commerce Manager for everything on this page.
How to set up a Facebook and Instagram shop in 2026
A shop is optional, and you don't need one for ads with product tags. If you want one, these are Meta's main requirements.
If you had a shop that used checkout on Meta, Meta recommends updating it rather than creating a new one. Shops ads still send people to whichever destination Meta predicts converts better, your website or your shop; pick the Website conversion location and turn Shops on under Personalized destinations.
- 1.Check your products are allowed. Meta's Commerce Policies bar downloadable digital content, digital subscriptions and digital accounts, and restrict medical and healthcare products, among other categories.
- 2.Have a Facebook Page or Instagram account for the store, plus the single non-shortened domain where you sell.
- 3.Display your refund and return policies clearly.
- 4.Add a checkout URL; without one, Meta says your shop won't be visible.
- 5.For Instagram, add an Instagram business account to your business portfolio.
- 6.Agree to the Seller Agreement and submit for review.
Why products get rejected or don't show in ads, and how to fix them
Meta reviews products automatically: ones that break the Advertising Standards won't show in ads, and ones that break the Commerce Policies won't show in your shop. Editing most product data sends it through review again. To see issues, go to Catalog, then Products, open Filters and choose Issues.
If a policy rejection looks wrong, request review: up to 100 products at a time and 5,000 every 7 days (Troubleshoot policy violations). Reviews typically take up to a few days. For rejections at the ad level, see why ads get disapproved on Google and Meta.
| Issue | Fix |
|---|---|
| Missing required attribute | Add the missing title, description, price, availability, link, condition or image link at the source (feed or store platform) |
| ID conflicts with group ID | Make every id and item_group_id unique; IDs are case sensitive |
| Universal identifier missing | Add at least one of brand, GTIN or MPN |
| Price or currency (Shops) | Keep prices between 0.50 and 10,000 and use one currency |
| Image errors | Make sure robots.txt doesn't disallow facebookexternalhit/1.1; fix broken links, files over 8 MB or images that are too small |
| Out of stock too long (Shops) | Items out of stock more than 56 days leave your shop; restock or remove them |
What we couldn't confirm (as of October 2026)
Checked October 23, 2026; these stayed open.
- 1.Whether Commerce Manager is free. No Meta page we read gives it a price, and Meta's old fees article now redirects to the checkout-change article.
- 2.The exact date Meta announced the checkout change. Meta's article says only "As of September 2025," and we found no Meta newsroom post.
- 3.Who gets direct checkout. We found no Meta page on eligibility, countries or fees; the details above are Shopify's.
- 4.Which countries can open a shop or use checkout on Meta; Meta's country list came back empty.
- 5.Match-rate target (90% vs 75%) and one-time upload limit (100 MB vs 4 GB), where Meta's pages conflict.
- 6.Title and description limits in Meta's developer docs, which appear to differ from the help center figures used here.
- 7.Whether Meta formally renamed Business Manager to business portfolio. Its pages use "business portfolio" throughout, but we found no sentence stating a rename.
- 8.Instagram product tagging requirements and the Conversions API's role in catalog ads.
Worked example: how a parent ID vs variant ID mismatch sinks your match rate
A made-up shop with round numbers. You sell 40 T-shirt designs in 3 sizes: 120 catalog items with IDs like TEE-014-M. Your pixel, though, sends the parent ID TEE-014, as an individual product ID rather than a group ID, in content_ids on every product-page view.
Over 28 days Meta receives 10,000 content IDs: 7,000 parent IDs from product views and 3,000 variant IDs from add-to-cart and purchase events. Only variant IDs exist in the catalog, so match rate = 3,000 / 10,000 = 30%, far below Meta's 90% recommendation.
You fix the pixel, and new events now match at, say, 95%. The rate won't jump overnight, because Meta reports a 28-day window with a 48-hour delay. Ten days after the fix, the window holds about 8 days of fixed events and 20 days of old ones. With equal daily traffic: (8 x 95% + 20 x 30%) / 28 = (760 + 600) / 28 = about 48.6%.
Only about 30 days after the fix (28 days plus the 2-day delay) does it read near 95%. The decision rule: judge an ID fix at day 30, not day 3. And fix the pixel rather than renaming catalog IDs, because Meta warns that changing content IDs can reset a product's event history.
Commerce Manager compared with
The settings this gets confused with, and how to tell them apart.
Common questions.
Is Meta Commerce Manager free?
Meta doesn't publish a price for Commerce Manager on any page we read, and anyone can create a catalog in it. Its old payouts page mentions a selling fee, but that describes Shops checkout, which Meta discontinued.
Is Facebook Commerce Manager the same as Meta Commerce Manager?
Meta's help center uses one name, Commerce Manager, and one address, facebook.com/commerce_manager, for the tool.
Do I need a shop to run catalog ads?
No. Meta says you don't need a shop to use Commerce Manager or to run ads with product tags. You need a catalog, ideally connected to your Meta Pixel. Shops ads are the format that requires a shop.
Where do I find Commerce Manager?
Go to facebook.com/commerce_manager. If your catalog isn't listed, switch business portfolios from the dropdown in the top left.
What is the difference between Commerce Manager and Business Manager?
Meta's current pages talk about a business portfolio, the container for your Page, Instagram account and ad account; we found no Meta sentence confirming a rename from Business Manager. Commerce Manager is the tool for catalogs and shops, and each catalog sits inside a portfolio.
How do I connect Shopify to Commerce Manager?
Shopify is one of the partner platforms Meta lists for importing products. After syncing, edit products in Shopify, because Meta overwrites manual edits in Commerce Manager on each sync.
Why are my products not showing in my ads?
Check Catalog, Products, Filters, Issues for policy problems, then availability (out-of-stock items leave ads) and match rate. A brand-new catalog can also take several weeks to reach full performance.
