Discover Feed vs YouTube Placements: Still Image Feed or Video
In short: Both are non-search Google placements that deliver on interest and audience signals rather than a typed query, and both are reachable through Demand Gen or Performance Max. Discover Feed is a scrollable image-and-headline card people browse past; YouTube Placements is video people actually watch, with real duration and completion signals Discover simply doesn't produce. YouTube also has its own dedicated Video campaign type and a large connected TV footprint with no click path, while Discover only ever shows up as a byproduct of Demand Gen or Performance Max delivery. Reach for Discover when a strong still image is what you have and you want a cheap, mobile-native placement; reach for YouTube when the product needs motion or you want reach into the living room.

Discover Feed
Ads placed inside Google's personalized recommendation feed, which appears in the Google app and on Android home screens between suggested articles and videos.
Discover inventory is bought through Demand Gen and Performance Max rather than chosen directly, and delivery is driven by audience signals and creative instead of a query. It suits visual, interest-led demand creation far more than demand capture. The mistake is applying Search expectations: intent is absent, so conversion rates and attribution look weak unless you measure with view-through data or lift tests.
Full definitionYouTube Placements
Video and in-feed ad inventory on YouTube, covering the watch page, home feed, search results, and Shorts across TV, mobile, and desktop.
You buy YouTube through Video, Demand Gen, Performance Max, or App campaigns, and the surface an ad lands on determines which formats are allowed and how a view gets counted. Reach for it when you need scale beyond Search or need motion to explain the product. Most advertisers forget how much YouTube is watched on connected TV, where there is no clickable response.

The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Discover Feed | YouTube Placements | |
|---|---|---|
| Creative format required | A still image, or short video in Demand Gen, with headline and description text. | Video, cut and sized per format - in-stream, in-feed, or vertical Shorts. |
| Dedicated campaign type | None - only ever a byproduct placement of Demand Gen or Performance Max. | Yes - a standalone Video campaign type, plus placement inside Demand Gen, Performance Max, and App. |
| Engagement signal available | Impressions and taps only - no watch-time or completion data because there's nothing to watch. | View duration, completion rate, and skip behavior, in addition to clicks. |
| Where the delivery signal comes from | Interest and content-consumption signals feeding the Google app and Android feed. | Watch and subscription behavior across YouTube, plus the same audience signals Demand Gen and Performance Max use. |
| Connected TV reach | None - Discover is a handheld, feed-based surface. | Significant - a meaningful share of YouTube viewing happens on a television with no click path. |
| Production cost | Low - reuses image assets you likely already have. | High - needs real video production, per format. |
| Failure mode | Treating a Discover impression like a search impression and expecting search-level intent. | Judging connected TV-heavy delivery by click-through rate, which was never going to register. |
What actually separates them.
Discover is browsed - a scroll past a card - while YouTube is watched, so completion and watch-time are real signals Discover can't produce.
YouTube has a dedicated Video campaign type with its own format menu; Discover has no dedicated campaign type at all and only appears as delivery inside Demand Gen or Performance Max.
Discover creative is a still image, with Demand Gen also allowing short video; YouTube creative must be video, cut and sized separately for each format it can serve into.
YouTube carries meaningful connected TV reach with no click path; Discover is entirely handheld, so a tap-through is always available on every impression.
YouTube reporting breaks results out by format and device, down to connected TV versus mobile; Discover now gets its own channel line in Demand Gen and Performance Max reporting, but without that same format-and-device breakdown.
Which one should you use?
Use Discover Feed when
- You have a strong still image and want a cheap, mobile-native placement without producing video.
- You're building interest-led awareness for a new product before anyone is searching for it.
- Budget doesn't stretch to video production this cycle.
- You want a placement that lives inside a feed people are already scrolling, not one they have to press play on.
Use YouTube Placements when
- Your product needs demonstration or a story that a still image can't tell.
- You want reach into connected TV and living-room viewing.
- You're running full-funnel work and want the added control of a dedicated Video campaign.
- You already have video assets, including Shorts-format clips, ready to deploy.
Common questions.
Can one asset group serve both Discover and YouTube?
Yes, inside Demand Gen or Performance Max - since it's one automated buy across surfaces rather than a per-placement booking, the same asset group can be delivered to Discover, YouTube, and other placements based on what performs. That's also why isolating results by individual surface has limits without segmenting in reporting.
Why doesn't Discover show a view count like YouTube does?
Because Discover isn't a video-watching surface by default - it's a browsable feed of images and headlines, so there's no watch-time or completion event to count. What Discover reports is impressions and taps, not views.
Is Discover part of the Google Display Network?
No. Discover is a distinct placement from the sites and apps that make up the Display Network, even though it's reachable through some of the same automated campaign types.
Can I control how much budget goes to Discover versus YouTube inside one campaign?
Not as a percentage split. Demand Gen lets you switch the Discover or YouTube channel off entirely for an ad group, and Performance Max still has no such switch, but neither gives you a slider that sends a set share of budget to one surface over the other - Google's automated bidding decides that mix from your assets and audience signals.
Or stop choosing between them.
