Campaign Types & Objectives

Conversions vs Engagement Objective on Meta: Old Names, New Flow

In short: Half of this comparison has been renamed. Engagement still exists and still buys in-platform actions. Conversions was the pre-ODAX name for optimizing toward a pixel event and now lives inside Sales and Leads. Old funnel diagrams that stack Engagement under Conversions are describing a structure the interface no longer uses.

Conversions Objective (Legacy)

Pre-ODAX Meta objective name for optimizing toward pixel events, retired when objectives were consolidated and now covered by sales and leads.

Under Meta's older objective set, Conversions was what you selected to optimize toward a pixel or Conversions API event, sitting alongside Traffic and Engagement. The ODAX consolidation mapped it into Sales or Leads depending on the event, and existing campaigns were migrated. The term still appears in older guides and API references. Treat it as a naming legacy, not a capability missing from current accounts.

Engagement Objective

Optimizes Meta delivery for reactions, comments, shares, video views, messages, or event responses rather than for site visits or purchases.

You select an engagement type and conversion location, and delivery seeks people likely to take that cheap in-platform action. Advertisers use it to build social proof on a creative, grow video-view audiences for retargeting, or warm a post before scaling it elsewhere. The common error is mistaking cheap engagement for demand; those audiences rarely convert without a follow-up campaign optimized on a business event.

What actually separates them.

01

The consolidation renamed the conversion tier and left Engagement largely intact, which is why old three-tier funnel diagrams read as half-current.

02

Conversion location is now an explicit step inside Sales and Leads, where the old objective set implied it through the pixel event you picked.

03

Engagement optimizes toward actions Meta can see without any tracking setup, while the conversion tier has always depended on event quality.

04

Whether an old Conversions campaign maps to Sales or Leads depends on the event, and neither of them behaves like Engagement.

05

Legacy enums persist in exports and third-party tools long after the interface has moved on.

Which one should you use?

Use Conversions Objective (Legacy) when

  • Reading pre-consolidation guides, courses, or agency funnel decks.
  • Auditing historical campaigns where the legacy label still appears.
  • Maintaining API integrations or dashboards exposing the old enum.
  • Translating an old three-tier funnel plan into the current objectives.

Use Engagement Objective when

  • You want social proof on a creative before scaling it.
  • Video-view or post-engagement audiences are being built for retargeting.
  • The sale happens in conversation and messages are the outcome.
  • An event needs responses rather than site visits.

Common questions.

Old advice says run Engagement then Conversions. Does that still apply?

Read Conversions as Sales or Leads and the sequence becomes testable rather than automatic. Warming with Engagement builds pools selected for cheap interaction, which often retarget worse than fresh prospecting. Keep the part of the old advice that is still true, which is that creative proof helps, and verify the rest.

Is Engagement the modern replacement for anything that was retired?

No. It absorbed some older consideration objectives around post engagement, video views, and messages, but it did not inherit anything from the conversion tier. If you need a pixel event optimized, that is Sales or Leads, whatever an older diagram places above or below it.

Why does my dashboard still show a Conversions objective?

Exports and integrations often keep legacy enums so historical rows remain readable across the rename. It is a labeling artifact, not a configuration you can select today. Look at the optimization event and conversion location on the ad set to see what delivery is genuinely being asked to find.

Or stop choosing between them.

AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
