Testing & Measurement

Brand Lift Tests vs Conversion Lift Tests

In short: Both are randomized experiments a platform runs for you, splitting your audience into an exposed group and a genuine control - the difference is what they measure at the end. Brand lift tests poll people with a short survey and report a shift in recall, awareness, or consideration. Conversion lift tests track actual conversion events and report incremental conversions or revenue. Run brand lift when the campaign's job is to be remembered, and conversion lift when the campaign's job is to directly drive sales or leads.

Brand Lift Tests

Surveys exposed and control users to measure shifts in ad recall, awareness, or consideration rather than clicks and conversions.

The platform polls a randomized holdout alongside people who saw the campaign, then reports the percentage-point difference in survey responses. It is the standard read for video and awareness work where no purchase is expected inside the window. Minimum spend and reach thresholds usually apply. The misuse is treating a recall lift as a revenue result; it evidences memory, not demand, and needs pairing with a conversion or geo test.

Conversion Lift Tests

A platform-run randomized experiment that holds a control group out of your campaign and reports the incremental conversions attributable to it.

Meta and Google both operate these internally, splitting your target audience into test and control and using their own identity graph to keep the control clean. You request one when you need incremental numbers rather than attributed ones, usually before a budget decision. Two limits to hold onto: the platform is grading its own work, and results only cover that platform, so cross-channel effects stay invisible.

What actually separates them.

01

Brand lift reports a percentage-point shift in survey answers; conversion lift reports incremental conversions or revenue, so the two are not interchangeable evidence for the same budget decision.

02

Brand lift needs enough impression or video view volume to sample a meaningful survey population; conversion lift needs enough tracked conversions to detect a gap, so thin-funnel accounts often qualify for one but not the other.

03

A strong brand lift result does not guarantee any downstream conversion effect, and pairing the two tests is the only way to see whether recall actually translated into demand.

04

Both are run and graded by the platform itself, so neither test can validate the other platform's spend or catch effects that show up somewhere else in the account.

05

Brand lift is the standard read for awareness and video flights with no expected in-window purchase; conversion lift is the standard read whenever the campaign's own objective is the conversion event being tracked.

Which one should you use?

Use Brand Lift Tests when

  • Your campaign is video or awareness-focused and no purchase is expected inside the test window.
  • You need to justify upper-funnel spend to a budget owner who wants evidence beyond impressions and views.
  • You have enough reach to meet the platform's survey sampling thresholds.
  • You want to know if the creative is landing before you scale spend behind it.

Use Conversion Lift Tests when

  • Your campaign's objective is a trackable action, a purchase, lead, or signup, and you have the tracking to measure it.
  • You are deciding whether to keep, cut, or grow budget on a specific platform based on incremental results, not attributed ones.
  • You have enough conversion volume in the account for the platform to detect a real gap.
  • You want a causal number to defend a budget decision rather than relying on the platform's attributed reporting.

Common questions.

Can I run a brand lift test and a conversion lift test on the same campaign?

Yes, and it is often the right move for upper-funnel campaigns you want to eventually justify on revenue. Run brand lift to confirm the creative is landing and conversion lift, sometimes after a longer window, to see whether that recall shows up as tracked demand.

Why can't I request a conversion lift test on my account?

Most platforms require a minimum level of tracked conversion volume before they can detect a statistically reliable gap between exposed and control groups. If your account is below that threshold, the test either will not qualify or will run too long to be useful.

My brand lift numbers looked great but sales did not move. What happened?

Recall and consideration measure memory, not purchase intent, so a real lift in survey responses can exist without any near-term revenue effect. That is expected for upper-funnel creative and is exactly why brand lift needs to be paired with a conversion or geo read before you call it a revenue win.

Are these results as trustworthy as an independent incrementality test?

They are genuinely randomized, which puts them ahead of attribution-based reporting, but the platform is both running the experiment and grading its own campaign, and the result never covers effects outside that one platform. Treat them as strong single-channel evidence, not a full picture of total incrementality.

Or stop choosing between them.
