Awareness vs Conversions Objective on Meta: Old Funnel Naming
In short: One name survived and one did not. Awareness is still a current objective buying reach, impressions, and recall. Conversions was the pre-ODAX name for optimizing toward a pixel event and now lives in Sales and Leads. Old funnel decks that pair the two are describing a three-tier structure the interface has replaced.

Awareness Objective
Buys Meta reach, impressions, or ad recall lift, aimed at putting a message in front of as many relevant people as possible.
You set reach, impressions, ad recall lift, or video views as the performance goal, and Meta buys the cheapest qualifying inventory, with frequency caps available. Brands with a launch, a new geography, or a category-education problem use it. The mistake is running it as a default top-of-funnel layer and then grading it with last-click purchase reporting, which will always make it look worthless.
Full definitionConversions Objective (Legacy)
Pre-ODAX Meta objective name for optimizing toward pixel events, retired when objectives were consolidated and now covered by sales and leads.
Under Meta's older objective set, Conversions was what you selected to optimize toward a pixel or Conversions API event, sitting alongside Traffic and Engagement. The ODAX consolidation mapped it into Sales or Leads depending on the event, and existing campaigns were migrated. The term still appears in older guides and API references. Treat it as a naming legacy, not a capability missing from current accounts.
Full definitionSide by side.
The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Awareness Objective | Conversions Objective (Legacy) | |
|---|---|---|
| Status today | Current objective. | Retired naming, mapped into Sales or Leads. |
| What it buys | Reach, impressions, ad recall lift, or video views. | A pixel or Conversions API event you selected. |
| Old funnel tier | The awareness tier. | The conversion tier. |
| API naming | OUTCOME_AWARENESS. | The older CONVERSIONS objective enum. |
| Tracking required | None. | Working pixel or Conversions API with event volume. |
| Where you meet it | The campaign creation flow. | Older guides, dashboards, and historical data. |
What actually separates them.
Only the conversion tier was renamed, so a three-tier funnel deck now describes two current objectives and one retired label.
The underlying advice about funnel stages did not change: reach builds recognition and event optimization captures demand.
Conversion location is an explicit step in the current flow, where the old objective set implied it through your choice of pixel event.
Whether an old Conversions campaign belongs in Sales or Leads depends on the event, and neither is interchangeable with Awareness.
Awareness has always been measurable only through lift, and consolidating the objective list did nothing to change that.
Which one should you use?
Use Awareness Objective when
- A launch or new geography where recognition is the constraint.
- The brief is stated in reach at a controlled frequency.
- Category education has to precede demand capture.
- You have lift studies, geo tests, or holdouts to measure with.
Use Conversions Objective (Legacy) when
- Reading pre-consolidation courses, guides, or agency funnel material.
- Auditing historical campaigns where the legacy label appears.
- Maintaining API integrations or dashboards carrying the old enum.
- Translating an old funnel plan into the current six objectives.
Common questions.
Does the objective consolidation change funnel planning?
Not the thinking, only the vocabulary. You still decide whether a campaign is buying recognition or capturing demand, and you still measure the two differently. What changed is that the conversion tier is now named after the outcome, Sales or Leads, which makes the conversion location and optimization event explicit choices.
Where should an old Conversions campaign sit in a funnel deck now?
Under Sales if the event was a transaction, under Leads if it was a contact. Both occupy the same funnel position the old Conversions objective did. The only practical change is that you now choose where the conversion happens, including surfaces such as Messenger, WhatsApp, or calls.
Is Awareness still worth its old place at the top of the funnel?
When recognition is genuinely the constraint and you can measure lift, yes. What has not changed is that platform attribution cannot see most of its effect, so it loses every argument conducted in last-click reporting. Budget it from a brand mandate rather than from performance dashboards.
Or stop choosing between them.
AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
