Creative Formats & Assets

Advantage+ Catalog Ads vs Video Ads: Which Format Fits Your Funnel

In short: Both can run at any funnel stage, but one is an automated product-feed engine and the other is a single crafted asset. Advantage+ catalog ads pull products from a feed and assemble the ad per viewer; video ads are one file you produce and control creatively, shown the same way to everyone. Catalog ads need a synced feed plus pixel or Conversions API events to personalize; video ads need only the file and an optimization event. Choose catalog ads when you have inventory and retargeting signal to work with; choose video when you need to explain or demonstrate something a feed can't say on its own.

Advantage+ Catalog Ads

Pulls products from your catalog automatically and shows each person the items Meta predicts they are most likely to buy.

This is the current name for what advertisers still call dynamic product ads, or DPA, and the mechanics did not change with the rename. You supply a product feed plus pixel or Conversions API events, and Meta assembles the ad per person, most often retargeting viewed or abandoned items. The usual failure is feed hygiene: stale prices, missing images, or unmatched content IDs quietly starve delivery.

Video Ads

Plays a video in feed, Stories, or Reels, usually auto-muted, with sound available if the viewer taps or has audio enabled.

Meta serves the file into whichever placement wins the auction, so one upload can appear as a 4:5 feed clip and a 9:16 vertical unit. Reach for it when the offer needs demonstration or context that a still cannot carry. The usual mistake is designing for sound-on viewing: without burned-in captions and a visual hook in the first seconds, most of the audience never learns what you sell.

 Advantage+ Catalog AdsVideo Ads
What you build or uploadA product feed (images, price, availability) plus a template - no per-ad creative build.A single edited video file you produce and upload as-is.
PersonalizationYes - different viewers see different products pulled from the same feed.No - the same file plays for everyone in a given placement.
Data required to run wellA synced product feed plus pixel or Conversions API events like ViewContent and Purchase with matching content IDs.Just an optimization event tied to the ad account - no feed dependency.
Where it fits the funnelMostly mid to lower funnel - retargeting viewed or abandoned items, or prospecting off the catalog.Any stage, especially top-of-funnel awareness or consideration where explanation matters.
Production effortFeed and template setup happens once, then scales automatically to every product.A new edit is required every time you want a new creative angle.
Failure modeFeed hygiene problems - stale prices, missing images, unmatched content IDs - quietly starve delivery. No captions or weak hook loses sound-off viewers before they learn what you sell.
Reporting granularityAggregated by catalog set more often than clean per-SKU breakdowns without extra segmentation.Per-ad and per-placement metrics, including view-through measures like ThruPlay.

What actually separates them.

01

Catalog ads require an approved, synced product feed connected to pixel or Conversions API events; video ads need only the creative file and an optimization event, no feed dependency at all.

02

Catalog ads change which product appears per viewer using browsing or purchase history, while a video ad shows the identical clip to every viewer in a placement.

03

Catalog ads scale to hundreds of products from one ad setup, whereas each new video angle needs a full edit before it can run.

04

Video ads carry a real sequence - hook, demonstration, payoff - across a set duration; catalog ads assemble static frames per product with no narrative sequencing.

05

Catalog delivery can collapse when a feed set has too few eligible items for a person's signal, while video delivery is capped mainly by budget, audience size, and creative fatigue.

Which one should you use?

Use Advantage+ Catalog Ads when

  • Your product catalog has enough SKUs to make automatic retargeting worthwhile.
  • You're chasing cart abandoners or people who viewed but didn't purchase.
  • You want new products entering the catalog to start advertising themselves without a new ad build.
  • Your pixel or Conversions API events fire reliably with content IDs that match the feed.

Use Video Ads when

  • You're introducing a product or service that needs demonstration to be understood.
  • You're running a brand or awareness campaign with no catalog to speak of.
  • You want one crafted story that carries a specific message beat to beat.
  • You're testing a hook or angle and need full creative control over pacing and sequence.

Common questions.

Can Advantage+ catalog ads use video instead of static images?

Catalog ad templates are built to be image-based, since they pull product photos straight from your feed - video isn't the standard building block here the way it is for a purpose-made video ad. If you want video alongside catalog-level personalization, that usually means a separate creative strategy rather than swapping the catalog template's image slot for a video file.

Why is my catalog ad not showing enough products?

Usually the audience's browsing signal doesn't overlap with a large enough eligible product set in the feed, or the feed set itself is too narrow. Check feed sync status and item availability, and confirm your ViewContent and AddToCart events carry the correct content IDs before assuming budget is the problem.

Should I run video ads to retarget instead of catalog ads?

You can, but you lose the automatic per-person product selection - a video shows one fixed message to everyone regardless of what they browsed. Many advertisers combine both, using catalog ads for retargeting and video for prospecting or brand stages rather than picking one format for the whole funnel.

Do I need Conversions API for catalog ads to work?

Pixel alone can run catalog ads, but iOS privacy limits mean pixel-only signal undercounts events, which can quietly starve the retargeting audience the catalog ad depends on. Conversions API matters more here than it does for a plain video ad optimizing on reach or view-through.

Or stop choosing between them.

AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
