Meta needs a steady stream of purchase signals, from the pixel, the Conversions API, or both, to model who buys. It is the correct default for any store with real sales volume, since every shallower event is a proxy. The failure case is running it at a budget that cannot generate enough weekly purchases per ad set: delivery starves, the ad set never exits learning, and costs swing wildly.

What actually separates them.
Purchase optimization requires a real transaction event to learn from; ThruPlay optimization requires nothing but the video creative and normal delivery signals.
ThruPlay cost per result is almost always far lower than Purchase cost per result, because watching a video is dramatically easier than completing a checkout.
Purchase can carry a transaction value into value-based bidding, while ThruPlay has no revenue signal attached to it at all.
A campaign optimized for ThruPlay is being judged on creative retention, so its result metric is not comparable to a Purchase campaign's result metric even directionally.
Switching a video ad set from ThruPlay to Purchase changes the entire predicted audience, since watch-through behavior and buying behavior are not the same population.

- You are past the awareness stage and are running a bottom-of-funnel sales push.
Use ThruPlay Optimization when
- The goal of this campaign is brand awareness or message delivery, not a direct sale.
- You are testing which video creative holds attention before committing budget to it elsewhere.
- You have no purchase event, or volume too thin to sustain Purchase optimization, and want a video-native goal instead.
- You are building a video-view retargeting pool to use in a later, deeper campaign.
Common questions.
Can a ThruPlay campaign still drive purchases?
It can produce purchases as a side effect if the video includes a strong call to action, but the algorithm is not selecting for people likely to buy, it is selecting for people likely to watch. Any purchases you see should be treated as a bonus, not evidence the campaign is efficient at generating sales.
Why is my ThruPlay cost per result so much cheaper than my Purchase cost per result?
Because watching a video requires almost nothing from the viewer while buying requires payment and commitment, ThruPlay will nearly always report a lower cost per result. That gap is expected and does not mean the ThruPlay campaign is more efficient - the two campaigns are optimizing for entirely different actions.
Should I run Purchase optimization on my brand video ads?
Only if the video ads sit in a campaign with a real conversion goal and enough purchase volume to sustain delivery. If the video's job is awareness or storytelling rather than an immediate sale, ThruPlay is the more honest optimization target, and you should judge revenue impact separately through lift studies or downstream conversion data.
