Campaign Types & Objectives

Performance Max vs Video Campaigns: Buying YouTube

In short: A Video campaign buys YouTube deliberately: you choose the format, the audience, and the goal, and you can see what the video did. Performance Max may also serve on YouTube, but only as one surface among several and entirely on its own terms. Use Video when YouTube is the strategy, Performance Max when YouTube is one channel among many.

Performance Max

Runs across every Google surface from one campaign, with Google choosing placements, audiences, and creative combinations against the conversion goal you set.

You supply asset groups, audience signals, a budget, and a conversion goal, and Google assembles ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Advertisers reach for it when they want reach and automation without daily management. The common misunderstanding is treating audience signals as targeting; they are only hints, and weak conversion tracking makes the whole campaign optimize toward the wrong thing.

Video Campaigns

Buys YouTube inventory across in-stream, in-feed, and Shorts, with goals ranging from reach and views through to conversions and product consideration.

You choose a subtype tied to a goal, upload YouTube-hosted videos, and target by audience, topic, or placement while paying per view, impression, or conversion. Advertisers use them for awareness, consideration, and product education. The common error is repurposing a long brand film with no hook in the opening seconds, then blaming skip rates on the platform rather than the creative.

What actually separates them.

01

Performance Max cannot be forced to spend on YouTube, and a Video campaign cannot spend anywhere else.

02

Video campaigns can be bought against upper-funnel goals such as reach and views, whereas Performance Max only optimizes toward a conversion goal.

03

Conversion-focused YouTube buying has largely migrated into Demand Gen, so the practical choice is often Performance Max, Demand Gen, or a Video campaign for awareness.

04

If you supply no video, Performance Max may generate one from your other assets, which is rarely the creative a brand would have chosen.

Which one should you use?

Use Performance Max when

  • The goal is conversions and you genuinely do not mind which surface delivers them.
  • Conversion tracking is good enough for Google to optimize against.
  • Your video exists to support performance rather than to carry a brand message on its own.
  • You want one budget managed automatically instead of several channel budgets to balance.

Use Video Campaigns when

  • You need guaranteed YouTube delivery for a launch, a sponsorship window, or a brand message.
  • Awareness, reach, or ad recall is the actual objective rather than a click.
  • You want to control frequency, sequence creative, or exclude specific channels and content types.
  • You are measuring with brand lift or survey work rather than last-click conversions.

Common questions.

Will Performance Max run my video on YouTube?

It might, but there is no guarantee and no way to require it. Performance Max allocates across surfaces based on where it predicts conversions, so YouTube spend can be substantial one week and negligible the next. If a reliable level of YouTube delivery matters, buy it in a Video or Demand Gen campaign instead.

Should I stop running Video campaigns now that Performance Max exists?

Only if awareness was never the point. Performance Max is a conversion product and grades everything against that goal, so a brand or launch objective has no home inside it. Keep Video campaigns for reach, frequency control, and message discipline, and let Performance Max handle response-driven spend.

What happened to Video Action campaigns?

Google retired them and moved conversion-focused YouTube buying into Demand Gen, which now carries in-stream, in-feed, and Shorts inventory alongside Discover and Gmail. Video campaigns remain for reach, views, and awareness goals. If your old Video Action campaign was driving conversions, Demand Gen is its closest replacement rather than a Video campaign.

Or stop choosing between them.

AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
