Performance Max vs Standard Shopping for Ecommerce
In short: Both sell products from your Merchant Center feed. Standard Shopping keeps bidding, product group structure, negatives, and search terms in your hands. Performance Max adds YouTube, Display, Discover, and Gmail inventory and takes those controls away. If both target the same products in one account, Performance Max serves and the Shopping campaign goes quiet.

Performance Max
Runs across every Google surface from one campaign, with Google choosing placements, audiences, and creative combinations against the conversion goal you set.
You supply asset groups, audience signals, a budget, and a conversion goal, and Google assembles ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Advertisers reach for it when they want reach and automation without daily management. The common misunderstanding is treating audience signals as targeting; they are only hints, and weak conversion tracking makes the whole campaign optimize toward the wrong thing.
Full definitionStandard Shopping
Keeps bidding, product group structure, and negative keywords under your control while serving feed-based product listings on Search and the Shopping tab.
It pulls products from your Merchant Center feed, and you set bids by product group, add negatives, and read search terms. Advertisers choose it when they need the visibility and control Performance Max will not give, or want to protect specific margins. The mistake is treating the feed as a technical chore: titles, attributes, and images decide which queries you match at all.

The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Performance Max | Standard Shopping | |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory | Shopping plus Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps | Search results and the Shopping tab, plus Search Partners |
| Bidding control | Automated only, with a value or CPA target at most | Bids by product group, including manual, plus automated options |
| Query control | Campaign-level negative keywords, no product-group negatives | Negative keywords plus a full search terms report |
| Priority in one account | Outranks Standard Shopping on overlapping products, regardless of bid | Serves only for products Performance Max is not covering |
| Reporting | Asset group and product level, without query-to-product detail | Product, product group, and search term level |
| What you manage | Assets, audience signals, budget, conversion goal | Bids, product groups, negatives, feed quality |
What actually separates them.
Standard Shopping serves only product listings, while Performance Max serves those listings plus text, image, and video ads from the same budget.
Within a single account Performance Max takes precedence over Standard Shopping for overlapping products regardless of bid, so running both on the same inventory silences the Shopping campaign.
Standard Shopping lets you bid differently by product group and exclude queries, whereas Performance Max offers only campaign-level negatives and one goal.
Search terms and product-level query data are visible in Standard Shopping and largely hidden in Performance Max.
Both depend entirely on feed quality, but only Standard Shopping lets you act on what the feed is matching, query by query.
Which one should you use?
Use Performance Max when
- You want the catalog on YouTube, Discover, and Display without building and maintaining separate campaigns for each.
- Conversion value tracking is accurate, including margin or new-customer value if you are able to send it.
- The catalog is large and reasonably uniform, and you would rather Google allocate across it than manage product groups by hand.
- There is no one available to read search terms and adjust bids every week.
Use Standard Shopping when
- Margins differ sharply by product and you need to bid accordingly rather than at one blended target.
- You must exclude queries, whether competitor names, wrong-intent modifiers, or terms you cannot legally appear against.
- You are testing feed changes and need clean, attributable, product-level query data to read the result.
- You want a controllable campaign for specific products, with those products excluded from the Performance Max listing groups.
Common questions.
Can Standard Shopping and Performance Max run at the same time?
Yes, but not on the same products. Within one account Performance Max outranks Standard Shopping for overlapping items, so the Shopping campaign loses impressions. Split by inventory, excluding the products you want in Standard Shopping from the Performance Max listing groups, or accept that Standard Shopping only picks up what Performance Max ignores.
Is Standard Shopping being retired?
It remains available, but Google's defaults and new features point at Performance Max first. Treat Standard Shopping as a control instrument you choose deliberately rather than as the default path, and make sure whoever runs it actually uses the bidding, negative, and product group controls that justify the extra work.
How do I stop Performance Max from eating brand searches?
Use brand exclusions and campaign-level negative keywords in Performance Max, and keep a dedicated brand Search campaign with exact match keywords, which take priority for identical queries. Then compare non-brand conversions before and after, because a campaign fed on brand traffic looks efficient while adding very little that is incremental.
Or stop choosing between them.
AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
