Dynamic Creative
By the AdFlint research team · Last reviewed November 2026
Takes multiple images, headlines, and body texts you supply, then assembles and tests combinations of them per person at delivery time.
You upload the components and Meta decides which image pairs with which headline for each impression. It is useful when you have several genuinely different angles and want the system to find winners without building every permutation by hand. It gets confused constantly with Advantage+ Creative, which alters creative you already made rather than mixing separate assets. Reporting is also coarser, since per-combination insight is limited.
Key takeaways
- Dynamic creative is an ad set toggle that combines your uploaded images, videos, headlines, and descriptions into automatic variations.
- Limits include up to 10 images or videos, up to 5 headlines, and up to 5 calls to action.
- As of June 2024, Sales and App promotion objectives may no longer allow it, and Meta recommends the flexible ad format.
- Results come back in aggregate, so use it to find good ingredients rather than to prove which exact pairing won.
In practice.
Dynamic creative is an ad set level setting in Ads Manager where you upload several creative elements, such as images, videos, headlines, and descriptions, and Meta combines them into different ad variations. Meta describes it as automatically testing combinations of creative elements to find the best performing variation. You turn on the Dynamic creative toggle at the ad set level, then at the ad level choose Single image or video, or Carousel as the format. The maximum number of images and videos is 10 in total. For text, you can add up to 5 headline options, and you can add up to 5 call-to-action buttons. For carousel, only images can be added.
The mechanics are a mix-and-match system. Instead of you producing every permutation, Meta assembles ads from the parts and shows different mixes to different people, learning which combinations work. In Ads Manager you can preview variations and use Advanced preview to see how they might look on different placements. Results are reported in aggregate for all combinations of the ad, which means you get less detail than if you ran separately built ads. This is why dynamic creative is best seen as a way to find good building blocks across several genuinely different angles, not as a precise testing lab.
Meta has narrowed where it works. The help center notes that as of June 2024, if you select Sales or App promotion as your objective, you may no longer be able to use dynamic creative when creating ad sets. Existing campaigns that used it are unaffected for now, and Meta recommends the flexible ad format to achieve a similar result. For Sales or App promotion, dynamic creative ads are also not compatible with dynamic language optimization or ad creative customization. Other objectives, including Awareness, Engagement, Traffic, and Leads, still list it. So check your objective before building a plan around it.
The common mistake is confusing it with Advantage+ creative. Dynamic creative combines separate assets you supply, whereas Advantage+ creative alters creative you already made. Another mistake is feeding in near-duplicates, such as five headlines that all say the same thing, which gives the system nothing real to learn from. A third is expecting a clean winner: because combinations are tested together and reporting is aggregated, you may not be able to say which headline pair beat which. Finally, too little budget spreads impressions across so many combinations that none gets enough data. Keep your inputs few and different: three distinct images and three distinct headlines teach the system more than ten near-duplicates.
This week, decide whether you need it. If you have three clearly different angles, for instance price, convenience, and quality, and a traffic or leads goal, run one dynamic creative ad set with 3 images, 3 headlines, and 2 descriptions. Give it enough budget to deliver steadily for at least a week. Then review the aggregate results and the breakdown by asset to see which pieces earned the most impressions and results. Take the best images and headlines into a manual ad to confirm. If your objective is Sales, plan around the flexible ad format instead. Write down the winning ingredients and reuse them in the next campaign, so each test builds on the last one.
Tutoring center tests three angles
Say a tutoring center wants leads for a summer program, using the Leads objective at $18 per day. It turns on dynamic creative with 3 images (a student at a desk, a parent and child, a report card), 3 headlines (Raise math grades, Small groups, Free assessment), and 2 descriptions. That is 18 possible image, headline, and description combinations.
After 14 days it has spent $252 and collected 21 leads, or $12 per lead. The asset breakdown shows the Free assessment headline received the most delivery and the parent and child image earned the most results. The numbers are made up. The center now builds a regular ad with that image and headline, adds a new headline about test scores, and runs it against the dynamic version. It does not claim to know the best exact pairing, only the best ingredients so far.

Common questions.
How many assets can I upload for dynamic creative?
Meta's help center says the maximum number of images and videos in a dynamic creative ad is 10. You can add up to 5 headline options and up to 5 call-to-action buttons. For carousel format, only images can be added.
Is dynamic creative still available for sales campaigns?
Meta says that as of June 2024, if you choose Sales or App promotion, you may no longer be able to use dynamic creative when creating ad sets. It recommends the flexible ad format for a similar result.
Can I see which combination performed best?
Meta reports aggregate results for all combinations of the ad. You can break results down by asset to see which ones were used and performed, but per-combination detail is limited.
What is the difference between dynamic creative and flexible ad format?
Both let you supply multiple assets and let Meta assemble the ad. Meta recommends flexible ad format as the replacement for similar results in Sales and App promotion campaigns where dynamic creative is no longer offered.
