Performance Max vs Dynamic Search Ads: Two Ways to Automate Coverage

In short: Both let Google decide what to advertise, but at different scales. Dynamic Search Ads are a dynamic ad group inside a Search campaign: Google crawls your pages, writes headlines, and serves text ads only. Performance Max is a whole-campaign buy across every Google surface with asset groups and a conversion goal.

Dynamic Search Ads

Google generates headlines and picks landing pages from your crawled website content, matching queries against pages instead of keywords you supply.

You point a target at your domain, specific page feeds, or categories, write the description line, and Google writes the headline per query. Advertisers use it for large catalogs and long-tail coverage gaps their keyword lists miss. The mistake is running it without negatives and page exclusions, so it cannibalizes brand terms and sends traffic to out-of-stock, policy, or careers pages.

Performance Max

Runs across every Google surface from one campaign, with Google choosing placements, audiences, and creative combinations against the conversion goal you set.

You supply asset groups, audience signals, a budget, and a conversion goal, and Google assembles ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Advertisers reach for it when they want reach and automation without daily management. The common misunderstanding is treating audience signals as targeting; they are only hints, and weak conversion tracking makes the whole campaign optimize toward the wrong thing.

What actually separates them.

01

Dynamic Search Ads live inside a Search campaign and inherit its budget, bid strategy, locations, and negative lists, whereas Performance Max is its own campaign with its own budget.

02

DSA targets pages on your site, while Performance Max targets a conversion goal and decides for itself which surfaces and audiences to use.

03

DSA only produces text ads on search inventory; Performance Max assembles image, video, and product ads too.

04

DSA gives per-target and per-query reporting inside the Search campaign, which is far more granular than Performance Max's asset group and channel signals.

05

Both risk taking brand queries, but DSA is controlled with page exclusions and negatives while Performance Max needs brand exclusions and campaign-level negative keywords.

Which one should you use?

Use Dynamic Search Ads when

  • Your site is large and no keyword list can cover the catalog or content depth.
  • You want long-tail search coverage without leaving the Search campaign's controls.
  • Conversion tracking is limited, so an automated conversion-goal campaign has nothing to learn from.
  • You want to discover converting queries and graduate them into keyword ad groups.

Use Performance Max when

  • Conversion tracking is solid, ideally with value signals attached.
  • You want reach beyond search: video, display, Shopping, and feed inventory from one budget.
  • You have creative assets in multiple formats, not just a website to crawl.
  • Nobody has time for page exclusions, negatives, and query maintenance.

Common questions.

Do DSA and Performance Max compete for the same searches?

They can, since both serve on search inventory without a keyword you chose. Google generally prefers an exact match keyword over both. Between the two, expect Performance Max to take traffic where its conversion goal is being met. Keep brand excluded from Performance Max and use DSA page exclusions so each covers a different part of the site.

Is DSA a cheaper alternative to Performance Max?

It is a narrower one rather than a cheaper one. DSA buys only search text ads and inherits your Search campaign's bidding, so costs behave like the rest of that campaign. Performance Max spreads a budget across seven surfaces, which changes the cost profile entirely. Compare them on the job each does, not on headline cost per click.

Which is safer for a site with thin content?

Neither is ideal, but Performance Max is less exposed. DSA generates headlines and picks landing pages directly from crawled content, so thin or outdated pages produce weak ads. Performance Max builds from assets you supply, which means a poor site hurts conversion rate rather than ad quality. Fix the pages before running either.

Or stop choosing between them.

AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
