Performance Max vs Demand Gen: Which Automated Campaign
In short: Performance Max spends one budget across every Google surface and hands placement, audience, and creative decisions to Google. Demand Gen stays inside Google's feed inventory, YouTube, Shorts, Discover, and Gmail, and lets you pick audience segments yourself. Demand Gen is the controllable upper-funnel buy; Performance Max is the whole-account automation.

Demand Gen Campaigns
Serves image and video ads across YouTube, Shorts, Discover, and Gmail using audience segments rather than keywords, inside Google's feed-based browsing inventory.
You load images and video, choose first-party or lookalike segments, and pick a conversion or click goal; Google places ads in feeds people browse rather than search. The type replaced Discovery campaigns and absorbed Video Action campaigns. Advertisers use it to create demand upstream of search. The mistake is expecting search-level intent and cutting it before view-through and assisted effects are measured.
Full definitionPerformance Max
Runs across every Google surface from one campaign, with Google choosing placements, audiences, and creative combinations against the conversion goal you set.
You supply asset groups, audience signals, a budget, and a conversion goal, and Google assembles ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Advertisers reach for it when they want reach and automation without daily management. The common misunderstanding is treating audience signals as targeting; they are only hints, and weak conversion tracking makes the whole campaign optimize toward the wrong thing.

The differences that actually change what happens in your account.
| Demand Gen Campaigns | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory | YouTube, Shorts, Discover, and Gmail only | Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps |
| Audience control | You choose segments, including lookalikes from first-party lists | Audience signals are hints; Google decides |
| Search inventory | None | Yes, including Shopping and text ads |
| Creative | Images and video you build for feeds, with previews | Asset groups Google recombines across every format |
| Goal options | Conversions, clicks, or awareness-oriented goals | Conversions or conversion value only |
| Reporting | Segment and creative level within feed placements | Coarse: asset group and channel-level signals |
What actually separates them.
Demand Gen never touches search or Shopping inventory, so it cannot cannibalize brand queries the way Performance Max can.
Audience targeting in Demand Gen is a real control you set, while Performance Max treats audience signals as hints it may ignore.
Demand Gen supports lookalike segments built from your own customer lists, which Performance Max does not offer as a targeting mechanism.
Performance Max requires reliable conversion tracking to optimize at all; Demand Gen can still run usefully on a click goal when conversion data is thin.
Creative previews in Demand Gen let you see the ad as it will render in each feed, which Performance Max's recombination model cannot show reliably.
Which one should you use?
Use Demand Gen Campaigns when
- You want feed reach without letting a campaign take your search and Shopping traffic.
- First-party lists exist and lookalike segments are worth building from them.
- Creative is genuinely visual or video-first and would look native in a feed.
- You need audience-level control and reporting an automated whole-surface campaign will not give.
Use Performance Max when
- Conversion tracking is solid, ideally with value signals, and you want one budget covering every surface.
- You sell from a Merchant Center feed and want Shopping working alongside video and display.
- Nobody has capacity for daily campaign maintenance and consistency matters more than control.
- Search is already at high impression share and growth has to come from surfaces you are not buying yet.
Common questions.
Do Demand Gen and Performance Max compete for the same impressions?
They overlap on YouTube, Discover, and Gmail, since Performance Max buys those surfaces too. Google generally will not show both to the same user in the same moment, but budget can shift between them in ways campaign reporting hides. Keep budgets separate, give each a distinct job, and judge total account results.
Which one should I add first?
If conversion tracking is solid and you sell products, Performance Max usually adds volume faster because it includes Search and Shopping inventory. If your problem is upper-funnel reach, or you specifically do not want a campaign touching brand search, Demand Gen is the safer addition because its inventory footprint is bounded.
Can Demand Gen replace the old Video Action campaigns?
Yes, that is exactly what happened. Demand Gen replaced Discovery campaigns and then absorbed Video Action, adding in-stream and Shorts inventory alongside the original feed placements. If you previously ran Video Action for conversions, Demand Gen is where that buy now lives, with more creative production expected than the old image-only setup.
Or stop choosing between them.
AdFlint picks the setting, writes the ads, and keeps optimizing inside the Google and Meta accounts you already own.
